David Cameron directly confronted Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, about the murder of Alexei Navalny. However, Lavrov avoided eye contact and instead focused on his phone.
During the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, the British foreign secretary addressed the Russian official about Mr. Navalny, who was recently declared deceased while serving a lengthy prison term in the Arctic. Mr. Navalny is a well-known critic of Vladimir Putin.
Last Wednesday, the United Kingdom implemented measures to freeze the assets of six Russian prison leaders who oversee the “Polar Wolf” prison camp. This action marks the first instance of a country imposing sanctions in response to the death of Navalny, with the UK stating that those responsible for his mistreatment will be held responsible.
According to an interview with the BBC, Lord Cameron stated that during speeches, representatives from France, Canada, and Germany also mentioned Mr Navalny and held President Putin and the Russian government accountable for his assassination. The discussion took place in a private setting, with each country being given five minutes to speak, typically in alphabetical order.
Yulia Navalny, the wife of Mr. Navalny, has accused Mr. Putin of being responsible for her husband’s death. He was transferred to a distant prison in the Arctic at the end of last year and has been given several unfair sentences that the global community and Mr. Navalny’s followers believe were fabricated to silence him. This incident occurs just one month before a presidential election, where Mr. Putin is predicted to effortlessly secure another term.
According to Ms Navalnaya, her husband’s body is being concealed by Russia until all traces of the nerve agent, novichok, disappear from his system. Mr Navalny was treated for poisoning with this agent in Germany last year, and he holds the Kremlin responsible for the attack. Upon his return to Russia in 2021, Mr Navalny was immediately arrested and has been in prison since then. Yulia last saw him in person two years ago.
In a video released on Monday, Ms. Navalnaya expressed her anger towards Mr. Putin and the Russian authorities, calling them “cowardly”. She stated that her husband was strong and unbreakable, which is why Putin had him killed. She also criticized the authorities for not having the courage to face her husband or even say his name. She accused them of hiding his body and not allowing his mother to see him, as well as lying and waiting for any evidence of the poison used by Putin to disappear.
Mrs. Navalnaya stated that the reason for Alexei’s death, which occurred three days ago, is known. She mentioned that they will share this information in the near future. They are determined to uncover the perpetrators and the details of the crime, including their identities and appearances.
Lyudmila Navalnaya, the mother of Mr. Navalny, has taken legal action in the Arctic city of Salekhard in protest of officials’ decision to withhold her son’s remains.
On Tuesday, Lyudmila requested that the Russian president allow her to retrieve her son’s body and give him a proper burial.
On the fifth day, I still haven’t been able to see him. They won’t let me have his body and won’t even disclose his location,” said Navalnaya, dressed in black, in a video taken at Penal Colony No. 3 in Kharp, which is approximately 1,200 miles (1,900km) away from Moscow.
The woman in the video, shared by Navalny’s team on social media, addressed Vladimir Putin, stating that the outcome of this situation rests entirely on him. She pleaded to be able to reunite with her son and demanded that his body be released promptly so she can give him a proper burial.
According to members of Mr. Navalny’s team, Russian officials have stated that the reason for his death is still unclear. They have also declined to release his body for the next two weeks while a chemical analysis is conducted.
During the G20 summit in Brazil, Lord Cameron delivered a speech in which he posed a question to all the participating countries – whether there was anything more significant to them than their own nation’s sovereignty. He referenced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which will hit its two-year mark on Saturday, as an example. Lord Cameron also emphasized the importance of sending messages about both Mr. Navalny and Ukraine to Russia’s allies. The UK has been playing a leading role in supporting Ukraine’s battle against Mr. Putin’s forces.
