According to the former editor of French Vogue, fashion designers were not interested in dressing Kim Kardashian due to her reality TV background being perceived as “cheesy.”
Carine Roitfeld, aged 69, is highly regarded as one of the most influential editors and stylists in the global magazine industry. She is credited as the creator of CR Fashion Book, a biannual publication recognized for its bold covers showcasing renowned celebrities such as Rihanna, Cher, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, and Kardashian.
Although it was implied that 43-year-old Kardashian was facing rejection from top fashion brands, the prominent figure in French fashion was swift to come to the defense of the owner of Skims.
Having appeared four times on the cover of CR Fashion Book – including in 2013, when Karl Lagerfeld photographed her while she was pregnant – Roitfeld said “she is more than nice and so well educated, and I like her.”
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Roitfeld revealed that some designers had hesitated to dress Kardashian in the past due to the perception that she was a “tacky, reality star”.
“Kim Kardashian was not receiving any outfit offers,” she revealed. “Why? Because she is often perceived as a superficial reality star, but in reality she is kind and highly educated, which I admire.”
Roitfeld met Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, through Riccardo Tisci, the previous artistic head of the French luxury brand Givenchy.
In an interview with the newspaper, Roitfeld shared her thoughts on her interactions with the Kardashians. She described Kris Jenner as funny and intelligent, and mentioned that she has met all of the sisters, but Kim remains her favorite.
Additionally, Roitfeld briefly touched on the topic of how Kardashian’s latest September CR cover shoot came about. During the shoot, her hair was styled in a cropped cut and her eyebrows were shaped into two thin lines using a pencil.
Ultimately, it boiled down to Roitfeld suggesting a fresh idea that deviated from the familiar sight of her in tight-fitting Skims and with her hair parted down the middle – a proposal that Kardashian was on board with.
Since starting her career on Keeping Up with the Kardashians in 2007, Kardashian has created her own line of shapewear called Skims, started her own skincare brand called SKKN, and partnered with luxury fashion brands like Dolce & Gabbana and FENDI.
In a previous episode of The Kardashians, she discussed finding her own unique fashion sense after her divorce from West.
Kardashian stated that she is currently attempting to determine her identity in the realm of fashion, as she was exclusively styled by the rapper throughout their relationship.
In a different part of the interview, Roitfeld was questioned about her approach to styling for the Princess of Wales and Queen Camilla.
“I would dress Kate Middleton in black,” she explained. “A lot of black, in fact. It seems to be a requirement for the royal family to wear black at funerals, but I would also incorporate more black into her everyday wardrobe.”
“Dark eye pencil. Increasing amounts of Saint Laurent, Chanel, and French influence.”
She mentioned that the pant-suit would suit the new Queen and make her look “fantastic.”
