Are you searching for a quick winter getaway in Europe? Turkey has many popular destinations that offer warm weather, especially in the southern regions. However, due to its large size, cities in the north, such as Istanbul, may not have high temperatures during the colder months.
Destinations along the aptly named Turquoise Coast, where colourful waters meet fine sands, welcome tourists all year round.
Popular destinations like Antalya and Marmaris are well-loved for their lively local atmosphere and abundance of activities for visitors seeking some winter sunshine. However, smaller and emerging spots like Fethiye and Side are becoming increasingly sought after due to their beautiful beaches, charming old cities, and rich historical landmarks.

Antalya, situated on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, is often considered the unofficial capital of the region. It serves as the starting point for numerous seaside vacations in Turkey. Bodrum is located on the former site of Halicarnassus, which was the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Bodrum, a highly sought-after summer destination in Turkey, also serves as a great choice for a winter getaway with an average temperature of 14C in February. Accommodations in the area range from luxurious to budget-friendly, and the nearby beaches such as Yahsi, Aspat, and Orak Island are among the top in the region.
Although renowned for its vibrant nightlife, the city is also an ideal destination for those interested in history. The 700-year-old Bodrum Castle is a must-see historical attraction. Other popular sites include the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, ancient city walls, and the Roman theatre. Additionally, there are plenty of activities to suit different interests, such as scuba diving at Gokova Bay or a wine tasting experience at Karnas Vineyards.
Fethiye is situated between the well-known vacation destinations of Dalaman and Oludeniz.
Fethiye experiences some of the warmest winter temperatures in the country, with an average high of 18C in December. The region features stunning golden sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters, extending to popular nearby destinations like Oludeniz. The beaches are framed by majestic cliffs and lush greenery, with notable natural attractions including Saklikent National Park and the turtles at Iztuzu Beach. Additionally, Fethiye is the starting point for the 300-mile coastal hiking trail, the Lycian Way.
The town of Fethiye is surrounded by mountains and filled with small buildings that line the shore. Its charming center and harbor are its defining features. People enjoy activities like paragliding, hiking, and visiting historical sites like the ancient sanctuary of Letoon and the Tomb of Amyntas, which date back to the 6th century BC.
Side is a lesser-known destination that shines in the winter sun.
Side, a less famous and smaller location compared to the other options mentioned, is gaining popularity among tourists. This is due to its various resorts that cater to package holiday-goers and the growing recognition of its ancient wonders. Its winter temperatures averaging 17C provide a combination of pleasant weather and coastal scenery, as well as historic allure and affordability.
The town has two main beaches, East Beach and West Beach, which are usually visited by locals and tourists, respectively. The Temple of Athena and a 2nd-century theatre on top of the old town’s hill mark the boundaries of Side, with the harbour below. While wandering through its winding streets, you’ll come across various Greek and Roman monuments, as well as modern souvenir shops and restaurants.
Marmaris is known for its beautiful coastal areas
Marmaris, located on the Turquoise Coast, is a vibrant and lively vacation spot that attracts many tourists every summer, ranging from party enthusiasts to those interested in history. The popular nightlife hub, Bar Street, lives up to its name, but the city becomes much quieter during the winter. However, with average temperatures around 15C, visitors can still enjoy activities such as Urban Beach or Long Beach during the day.
The juxtaposition of Marmaris’ bustling marina, filled with luxurious yachts, and the quaint alleyways of the old town creates a delightful contrast. One of the main draws of the old town is its lively Bazaar. Visitors with a thirst for knowledge can explore the castle and Marmaris Museum, while those seeking relaxation may opt for a peaceful day at the tranquil Jinan Gardens, inspired by Japanese design. In the evening, one can enjoy the entertainment of the Dancing Fountain in the heart of the town.
Alanya is situated amidst mountains and the ocean.
Alanya has a beautiful natural environment, with the Mediterranean Sea to the south and mountains to the north. The climate is typical of the Mediterranean, with an average of 300 sunny days per year and winter temperatures averaging around 16C. The town is situated on a gradual incline from the sea to the Toros Mountains, and the buildings on the mountainside resemble those found in Italy’s Cinque Terre with their reddish roofs.
However, Alanya offers more than just aesthetic appeal. There are many attractions to explore beyond the boundaries of all-inclusive resorts. The ancient castle, with its 6km walls, is a popular destination, along with the iconic Red Tower from the 14th century. Kleopatra Beach is also worth visiting, as it is said to have been a favorite spot of Cleopatra during her travels from Egypt.
