After a span of two years and a financial allocation of £370m, the Rwanda initiative, proposed by Priti Patel and Boris Johnson, is still pending in Parliament and continuously encountering modifications from both Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the House of Lords.
Mr Sunak recently faced another obstacle as members of the House of Lords voted on March 20th to require the government’s bill to consider international law and to ensure that the UK’s treaty with Rwanda is honored before resuming flights.
Given the ongoing discussion surrounding the Rwanda initiative, we are curious to hear your opinion on whether or not it is the most effective solution for addressing the issues within the UK’s asylum system.
Is it the most effective method to handle the issue of the small boat crisis by sending asylum seekers to Kigali, even if the plan is carried out?
There have been previous reports that Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, is contemplating a detailed blueprint for an “offshoring scheme” in order to counter Tory criticisms of Labour’s alternative to the Rwanda plan.
Would you support the proposal for migrants to have their asylum claims reviewed outside of the UK and those who are approved to be allowed entry into the country?
The Institute for Public Policy Research has suggested a different plan to the Government’s Rwanda program, which they deem to be impractical and expensive. This alternative proposal involves introducing a special refugee visa for Afghan people, which would enable them to request temporary entry to the UK through embassies in other nations. This would reduce the necessity for them to make dangerous journeys across the Channel.
Additionally, the IPPR urged for a revitalized partnership with European countries to address the issue of people trafficking, settle immigration statuses in northern France, and establish mutual understandings for handling asylum requests.
