Updates on the Ohio Senate race highlight the scrutiny of Trump's influence on endorsements: Live updates.

Dolan and DeWine are exuding assurance as they go head-to-head with Trump-endorsed candidate, Moreno, in Ohio.

On Tuesday, the state of Ohio is holding primaries for both the Republican and Democratic parties. The main focus is on the GOP senate race, where Donald Trump’s endorsement abilities will be closely watched. His preferred candidate, Bernie Moreno, who used to work as a car salesman, is facing off against two other candidates backed by the party establishment. The winner will have the opportunity to run against Democrat Sherrod Brown in the general election.

Mr Moreno was annointed by Mr Trump as his MAGA representative in the contest but faces stiff competition from state senator Matt Dolan and secretary of state Frank LaRose.

The Republican candidate for President praised Mr. Moreno as a “terrific person” during a 90-minute speech at the Dayton Air Show on Saturday. He then criticized Mr. Dolan, calling him a “RINO” and “the next Mitt Romney.”

He also criticized Mr. Dolan for his family’s ownership of the Cleveland Guardians, the baseball team formerly known as the Cleveland Indians. Mr. Trump implied that the name change was a result of the owners being influenced by “woke, left-wing crazies.”

During a press briefing on Monday, Mr. Dolan, along with Governor Mike DeWine, who has given his support, expressed optimism for the upcoming vote.

Can TSA still operate if the government shuts down?

Joe Sommerlad explains:

The state of the game does not pertain to individuals whose occupations are deemed crucial for ensuring public safety, including police officers, military personnel, air traffic controllers, healthcare workers, power grid technicians, or those in charge of managing social security, Medicare, and Medicaid disbursements.

What causes a government shutdown and what is its purpose?

In early March, congressional leaders approved their initial set of departmental spending bills, providing funding for approximately 30% of the US government.

They are currently racing against time to submit a bigger set of bills by a strict deadline in order to avoid a government shutdown until the end of the 2024 fiscal year on September 30, which is just a few weeks before the presidential election.

As of now, the federal funding for the departments of Homeland Security (DHS), State, Defence, Labor, and Health and Human Services is scheduled to end in the early morning of Saturday, March 23.

However, it now appears that the House of Representatives has reached a tentative deal to bankroll the DHS, an agreement that would enable it to pass a sticking point and allow negotiators to process the remaining five funding bills just in time to avert another partial government shutdown.

Here are some important inquiries regarding government shutdowns, a recurring concern that Congress faces when the opposing parties fail to reach a compromise on funding for important governmental positions.

Biden hails fall in crime rates over 2023

President Joe Biden released a statement praising the significant decrease in crime rates in the year 2023.

President Joe Biden has issued a statement commending the notable decrease in crime rates achieved in the year 2023.

Throughout the United States, families desire one thing above all else: the freedom to feel secure in their own neighborhoods, to know that their children are safe. The efforts of my Administration have brought this desire to fruition. Recent data from the FBI reveals a decrease in crime rates across nearly all categories in 2023. Last year, the country saw one of the lowest rates of violent crime in over half a century, with the murder rate experiencing the sharpest decrease in history. This positive news is a testament to the hardworking and resilient people of this nation.

In the year prior to my taking office, the previous administration oversaw a significant increase in murders. From day one, my Administration has been dedicated to addressing this issue. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, which was passed without a single Republican vote, we have made the largest federal investment in fighting and preventing crime in our nation’s history. This has allowed cities and states to allocate $15 billion towards public safety. Our record-breaking investment in reducing crime – through community violence intervention, mental health resources, and the addition of more law enforcement officers – is yielding tangible results. Police are able to stay on the front lines, ensuring that communities are safe from violence.

My Administration is also taking decisive action to tackle the crisis of gun violence. I have implemented more executive actions on gun control than any President before me, and I signed the most significant legislation on this issue in nearly three decades. Protecting the safety of our communities remains my top priority. While we have made significant progress, there is still work to be done. I will continue to push for increased investments in crime prevention, funding for accountable police officers to strengthen trust between law enforcement and communities, and a ban on assault weapons to keep dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands. I urge my Republican colleagues in Congress to join me in these efforts.
