It is anticipated that two well-known individuals from the Gambino criminal organization will be granted bail and released before Thanksgiving.
Judge Frederic Block of the Brooklyn Federal Court ruled to grant release to Diego Tantillo and Angelo Gradilone, known as “Danny” and “Fifi” respectively. This decision was based on the belief that the current generation of mobsters pose less of a threat than those from the past.
On Tuesday, Judge Block remarked that in the past, murderers were often released on bail. However, in this specific case, there is no possibility of that happening. He went on to note that it seems the younger generation of mafia members are not committing acts of murder like they used to.
Judge Block stated that we all possess a human element and mentioned that Thanksgiving will take place on Thursday. They suggested the possibility of releasing them tomorrow.
The New York Daily News reported that the decision was made nearly two weeks after two men, as well as eight other individuals believed to be part of the Gambino crime family, were accused of conspiring to gain power over the carting and demolition businesses in the city through violent means.
The indictment for racketeering charges these individuals with offenses including attacking a worker from a demolition company with a hammer and deliberately setting fire to the porch of a trash removal business owner’s home.
The individuals involved in the case, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, are accused of stealing from labor organizations and manipulating bidding processes in the demolition and hauling sectors from 2017 to 2021.
Judge Block inquired about the justification for detaining the two individuals while others involved in the alleged extortion were released on a $1 million bond following their arrests. Despite this, alleged Gambino leader Joseph Lanni was denied bail and ordered to remain in custody.
In late 2017, Mr. Tantillo, a 48-year-old member of the Gambino crime family from Freehold, New Jersey, known as a “made” member, began requesting monthly extortion payments from a business owner referred to as John Doe 1.
According to prosecutors, Tantillo once presented a metal baseball bat to John Doe 1 and stated that it was intended for him.
According to prosecutors, after John Doe 1 attempted to cease making payments for extortion in 2020, an individual purposely lit the steps of his residence on fire while his wife and children were present.
According to prosecutors, a member of the mob who was not permitted to participate in the event due to his lack of status as a made man sent a congratulatory message to Mr. Tantillo using secretive language.
According to prosecutors, the message stated, “I hope you have a good day, Dani. I am so happy for your new job and proud of you for signing the contract, even though I won’t be there. Good luck!”
According to prosecutors, Mr. Tantillo expressed his gratitude to Vito for his assistance in securing the contract and expressed hope for future success and improvement. He also thanked Vito as always.
Mr. Gradilone, a 57-year-old resident of Staten Island, has been charged with receiving a non-existent job as part of a conspiracy involving racketeering.
Judge Block stated that these charges do not seem to have the same magnitude as ones he has seen in the past.
Andrew Roddin, an Assistant US Attorney, contended that the two individuals were involved in a racketeering scheme with the objective of committing acts of violence such as arson, assault, and extortion.
The judge who oversaw the case of Peter Gotti, the former leader of the Gambino crime family and brother of notorious Mafia boss John Gotti, stated that he is well acquainted with the behavior of members of the mafia. However, he does not believe that this particular situation relates to his previous experiences.
Once their bonds are settled, Mr Tantillo and Mr Gradilone will be released. It has been agreed upon by both parties that Mr Tantillo will have a $5 million bond and Mr Gradilone will have a $1 million bond.
