Trump holds press conference as Harris leads among likely voters in new poll: Live
Trump worked up over question about crowd sizes during press conference

Kamala Harris says she welcomes Donald Trump’s decision to debate her in September, which the former president announced at a rambling press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday.

“I hear that Donald Trump has finally committed to debating me on September 10,” Vice President Harris wrote on X. “I look forward to it.”

At Mar-a-Lago, Trump said he would attend three debates — one on Fox News on September 4, one on ABC News on September 10, and one on NBC News on September 25 — while the Harris campaign is reportedly against starting with the Fox debate.

Trump’s announcement on the debates came after a string of flip-flops on whether he would participate.

During the press conference, the Republican spent approximately an hour answering questions and delivering an unhinged mix of his stump speech, punctuated with attacks on his Democratic opponent (and past ones) and a return to his favorite grievance — boasting about crowd sizes.

Trump also claimed that he was ahead in the polls, whereas in reality, even as the numbers are shifting and starting to favor the Democrats. The latest polling from Marquette University shows Harris leading by between four and eight percentage points.

Meanwhile on Truth Social, Trump rails against ‘witch hunts’

The special counsel’s office aren’t the only ones weighing in on the January 6 case this evening.

On Truth Social, Donald Trump launched a familiar attack on the cases against him.

Here’s what he said:

It is clear that the Supreme Court’s Historic Decision on Immunity demands and requires a Complete and Total Dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts — The January 6th Hoax in Washington, D.C., the Manhattan D.A.’s Zombie Case, the New York A.G. Scam, Fake Claims about a woman I never met (a 40 year old photo in a line with her then husband does not count!), and the Georgia “Perfect” Phone Call charges. The Democrat Justice Department coordinated ALL of these Political Attacks, which are an Election Interference Conspiracy against Crazy Kamala Harris and Crooked Joe Biden’s Political Opponent, ME. Let us come together to END all Weaponization of our Justice System, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Bad news in the battleground states for Trump

(Getty Images)

“Three weeks ago, Donald Trump was leading President Joe Biden in the Cook Political Report national vote tracker by about 2.5%,” editor-in-chief Amy Walter wrote on Thursday. “Today, Kamala Harris leads Trump by less than one point, a shift of more than three points in Harris’ direction. Battleground state polls are showing similar results, with Harris cutting into Trump’s lead by anywhere from two to five points.”

The site also found that the projected election results were within the margin of error in the “Blue Wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Special counsel’s office wants more time to weigh immunity precedent in Trump January 6 case

As part of its January 6 case against Donald Trump, the special counsel’s office is asking a Washington federal court for more time to analyze the Supreme Court’s recent decision on presidential immunity.

“The Government continues to assess the new precedent set forth last month in the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States,” the special counsel’s office wrote in a court filing on Thursday.

It suggested reconvening at the end of August.

Here’s our report from Alex Woodward on how the January 6 case is coming back to life.

How Vance’s plane incident with Harris adds to his weird factor

Since being announced as Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance has struggled to overcome allegations from his opponents of being “weird.” His current campaign strategy doesn’t appear to be helping.

Vance has embarked on what some critics have described as a “stalking” tour of Kamala Harris’s campaign, shadowing her tour of battleground states and holding parallel events on the same day in each city. So far, he has followed Harris through Philadelphia, Wisconsin and Michigan.

The practice is called “bracketing” in the vernacular of political campaigns, and is not so unusual. But on Wednesday, Vance took things a step further when he approached Harris’s jet as they were both on the airport tarmac in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at the same time.

Richard Hall reports.

A far-right thug was caught punching a police officer in the face during a violent protest outside a mosque in Southport. Bodycam footage recorded the moment Derek Drummond launched himself at the police officer on 30 July, after being told to “get back”. Drummond was also seen launching bricks and other items at officers. The attack happened after protests broke out following the murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift dance class in the town. Drummond has now been jailed for three years at Liverpool Crown Court for violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.
