The U.S. government is cautioning Americans about visiting the Bahamas due to an increase in violent incidents.
On Friday, the State Department released a travel advisory advising travelers to “be extra careful.”
The majority of criminal activity has taken place on the islands of New Providence and Grand Bahama, which are home to Nassau and Freeport. According to the advisory, Nassau’s Over-The-Hill neighborhood has experienced a significant number of homicides due to gang violence, primarily impacting the local community.
The US Embassy in the Bahamas reports that there have been 18 homicides in Nassau this year, largely attributed to “retaliatory gang-related violence.”
The embassy stated that murders have taken place at various times, even during daylight hours on the streets.
The State Department reported incidents of burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults occurring in both tourist and non-tourist locations.
“Exercise caution while staying at short-term vacation rentals without private security companies on site,” advised the travel warning.
The State Department cautioned travelers about participating in “activities using commercial recreational watercraft,” stating that they are not consistently monitored. Operators of commercial watercraft are allowed to continue operating their vessels, regardless of weather predictions, which has resulted in injuries and fatalities, according to the department.
It was stated that some watercrafts may not be well taken care of and certain individuals may not possess safety certifications. It is important to always check and follow local weather and marine alerts before participating in any water-related activities.
The department cautioned travelers against swimming alone, reminded them to be cautious of sharks, and advised them to stay updated on weather and water conditions.
