The fortuitous encounter between the research vessel of David Attenborough and the biggest iceberg in the world was deemed fortunate.

The RSS Sir David Attenborough came across the largest iceberg in the world as it moved away from Antarctica, marking its first journey away from the continent in 37 years.

On Friday, December 1st, the ship encountered the A23a iceberg in the Southern Ocean, which is approximately three times the size of New York City.

The chief scientist of the ship, Dr. Andrew Meijers, stated that it was fortunate that the iceberg’s path through the Weddell Sea aligned with our intended route.

The fortunate encounter gave scientists the opportunity to obtain seawater samples near the giant iceberg.
