Protests in Russia disrupt Putin's election campaign as Kiev focuses on targeting refineries in ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.

A massive explosion from a Russian gas pipeline occurred due to a string of “Ukrainian strikes”.

On Saturday, the governor alleged that drones from Ukraine targeted two state-owned oil refineries owned by Rosneft in the Samara region. This occurred as millions of Russians participated in a phony three-day presidential election where Vladimir Putin is anticipated to emerge victorious.

According to Dmitry Azarov, governor of Russia’s Samara region, there was a fire at the Syzran refinery. However, an attempted attack on the Novokubyshev refinery was stopped. Both refineries were evacuated and there were no reported injuries among workers.

On a previous occasion this week, there were assaults aimed at petroleum refineries in the Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Leningrad territories.

Following a promise from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a new strike has been carried out in response to Russia’s “vile” attack on Odesa. The assault resulted in the death of at least 20 individuals and injuries to at least 70.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Moscow’s most lethal strike in recent weeks occurred when a Russian missile targeted civilian infrastructure.

In Russia, several incidents of vandalism – including a firebombing – were reported at polling locations while the three-day presidential election was taking place. This election will lead to a six-year extension of Vladimir Putin’s presidency, which has been marked by suppression of opposing voices.

The election happens during a time when there has been a severe restraint on free press and influential human rights organizations, ultimately granting Putin complete dominance over the political structure.

The nation of Russia is currently holding an illegitimate presidential election over three days, and President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the polls. It is highly likely that Putin will be declared the winner.

The governor of Russia’s Samara region, Dmitry Azarov, reported that a fire broke out in the Syzran refinery located in the Volga River region, but an attempted attack on the Novokubyshev refinery was prevented. He confirmed that all workers at both facilities were safely evacuated and there were no injuries.

More than 33% of Russian voters participated in the election by casting their ballots.

According to Russia’s Central Election Commission, when polls closed on Friday night in the western region of Kaliningrad, over one third of eligible voters in the country had voted either in person or online.

Starting on Friday morning, people can vote online at any time until 8pm on Sunday in Moscow and 28 other regions.

According to reports from local news media, while voting was conducted in an organized manner, in St Petersburg, a female individual threw a Molotov cocktail onto the roof of a school which also serves as a polling location.

The vice chairman of the Russian Central Election Commission reported that individuals poured a green substance into ballot boxes at five locations, including Moscow.

It was reported by various news outlets that a woman in Moscow intentionally caused a voting booth to catch on fire. These actions carry a high level of danger as tampering with elections is a crime that can result in a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

There were no notable foreign observers in attendance. The monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe were excluded from the invitation list, and only approved candidates or government-affiliated groups are allowed to appoint observers to oversee voting locations, reducing the chances of impartial monitoring.

Conducting voting over a period of three days across almost 100,000 polling locations makes it challenging to ensure proper supervision.

Sam Greene, head of Democratic Resilience at the Centre for European Policy Analysis in Washington, stated that the overall election process in Russia is fraudulent. He pointed out that the Kremlin has ultimate control over who can run for office, how they can run their campaign, and even the voting and vote-counting procedures.

The international community, including Ukraine and Western nations, have denounced Russia for conducting a vote in Ukrainian territories currently under Russian control.

The ultimate strategy of Alexei Navalny to thwart Russia’s fraudulent elections.

Russian citizens will be voting for their new president this weekend, despite the outcome being predetermined.

The upcoming election on Sunday will result in a fifth term for Vladimir Putin, making him the longest-serving leader of Russia since Joseph Stalin. However, this term is considered unconstitutional.

According to the Russian dissident group, the rigged system and elimination of potential challengers through death, imprisonment, or exile means that voting against the candidate will not stop their success.

However, the community of Russian dissidents has devised a plan to disrupt this process of unquestionably approving something.

Known as “Noon Against Putin”, Russian citizens frustrated with the leader’s rule are being called to head to the voting booths all at the same time: Midday, 17 March, the final day of the election.

Tom Watling reports.

The United States and its allies caution Iran about the Russian missile agreement.

The United States and its partners have cautioned Iran about the possibility of Western powers imposing additional sanctions on them if they follow through with their plan to supply ballistic missiles to Russia for their conflict with Ukraine.

The administration of Joe Biden has expressed concerns for several months about Russia’s efforts to acquire short-range ballistic missiles from Iran due to a shortage of supplies in Moscow.

The United States has not yet verified reports of missile movement from Iran to Russia, but officials are concerned about statements made by Iranian officials hinting at an imminent agreement.

In September, the US government expressed concern over a potential agreement with Iran after the White House reported that Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu visited Iran to showcase a variety of ballistic missile systems.

When asked about the delay in finalizing the deal, White House representative John Kirby stated that he could not speak on behalf of the mullahs.

Russia has acquired and used North Korean ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials, however, say that North Korean missiles when deployed by Russian forces have frequently missed targets.

According to the White House, Russia has been given numerous single-use attack drones and equipment related to drone production by Iran.
