A previous overweight stray cat, who gained fame as the most popular tourist sight in the Polish city of Szczecin, has recently been adopted into a new family.
Gacek, a feline with black and white fur, resided in a sheltered wooden container on Kaszubska Street in the city for many years. Recently, Gacek has lost weight after becoming popular in a video on YouTube.
The video, with approximately 1 million views, captures the cat’s daily routine and garnering lots of attention from the community. An Instagram profile chronicling his adventures currently boasts 40,000 followers.
Gacek and his wooden box received numerous reviews and a five-star rating on Google Maps, catapulting him to the top spot as the most highly-rated “tourist attraction” in the city. One of Gacek’s listings had approximately 2,500 reviews before it was taken down, but the new listing has already accumulated around 500 reviews.
As of November 15th, it seems that there is currently no listing available. This may be due to Gacek, whose name translates to “long-eared bat” in Polish, finding a new place to live. According to Business Insider, residents were worried about the cat’s well-being as he was having issues with his teeth and joints. The local Animal Welfare Association took him in for treatment and later revealed that he was adopted in September 2023.
In a recent Facebook update, the Association provided an update on Gacek’s status. According to translations, the post states: “I am now George, not Gacek. Please refer to me as such from now on…. The feline version of George Clooney, that’s who I am now!”
“I am healthy and I am happy with it. I am constantly moving, running up and down stairs and jumping on countertops,” it reads.
The post is encouraging individuals to contribute cat food to aid other cats. It mentions that the shelves near their enclosures are devoid of food and the cats are currently confined and awaiting adoption.
