For approximately 20 years, the beaches and wetlands of Gilgo Beach on Long Island held a hidden truth.
One or more individuals who commit murder were present in the area, enticing escorts and sex workers and causing their deaths in a violent manner.
Several bodies were discarded on the shoreline and remained hidden for months or even years before being found.
In 2010, law enforcement was alerted by a woman’s distressing 911 call, prompting a search of the vicinity.
The findings were much more terrifying than anyone could have predicted.
In the following year, authorities found the bodies of 11 individuals, mostly female escorts, abandoned in the vicinity, causing fear among the residents of Suffolk County.
However, the investigation stalled and no individuals were taken into custody, no persons of interest were identified, and the victims and their loved ones were denied justice.
However, that has changed as of now.
In July, there was a sudden development in the investigation when Rex Heuermann, a married father of two, was arrested for allegedly being the notorious serial killer.
A 59-year-old individual was accused of killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. This person is also the main suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who was last seen in New York City in June 2007.
Mr. Heuermann, a native of Long Island, resided near Gilgo Beach, where the perpetrator disposed of his victims. He was also employed as an architect in Manhattan, where several of the women were last spotted before their deaths.
Is it safe to assume that the search for the perpetrator of the Gilgo Beach serial killings has come to an end?
What was the method of murder used on the victims at Gilgo Beach?
For over ten years, authorities in Suffolk County were unable to solve the Gilgo Beach murders, which they suspected were committed by one or more serial killers targeting sex workers and leaving their bodies on the secluded beaches of Ocean Parkway.
In May 2010, the situation started when Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute, disappeared after leaving a customer’s residence on foot near Gilgo Beach.
She dialed 911 seeking assistance, expressing fear for her safety, and was not seen alive thereafter.
In the recorded emergency call from last year, Gilbert can be heard repeatedly stating to the 911 operator that he is being pursued by someone.
She can also be heard in a dispute with a man, referred to as Mike, who seems to be urging her to enter a car again. She even asks him at one point if he plans on causing her harm.
She informs the dispatcher that these individuals are conspiring to end her life.
The police found the body of a different woman while searching for Gilbert in a thick area near the beach.
In just a few days, the bodies of three additional victims were discovered nearby.
As of spring 2011, a combined total of 10 individuals had been discovered, consisting of eight females, one male, and one young child.
In December 2011, Gilbert’s remains were discovered. The reason for her death is highly debated, as authorities have consistently maintained that it is unrelated to the actions of the serial killer(s). They believe she accidentally drowned while running away from the client’s residence.
Yet, a separate examination requested by her relatives concluded that her cause of death was strangulation, leading her mother to suspect foul play.
Similar to Gilbert, the majority of the individuals targeted were individuals involved in the sex industry.
Numerous hypotheses have been explored throughout time, but no individual has ever faced charges for the murders.
According to officials, it is suspected that three different serial murderers may have committed the killings over a span of approximately two decades.
The case seemed to become stagnant for multiple years, until last year when Rodney Harrison of the Suffolk Police promised to solve the case and hold the perpetrator(s) accountable.
The recently appointed commissioner expressed confidence that with a new perspective, he could successfully solve the cold case. He established a specialized task force to focus on the case.
Who were the victims at Gilgo Beach?
Authorities discovered the bodies of at least eleven individuals in the Gilgo Beach region, although it is uncertain if they were all murdered by the same perpetrator. Several of the victims were prostitutes who either advertised their services on Craigslist or operated in New York City.
The initial individual to be found was Melissa Barthelemy, whose body was located on Ocean Parkway on 11 December 2010 while authorities were searching for Shannan Gilbert – a 24-year-old sex worker from New Jersey who had disappeared after meeting a client in Oak Park and making a distressing 911 call expressing concerns for her safety.
On December 13, two days later, the bodies of three additional victims – Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello – were discovered nearby.
All three females were recognized for promoting escort services on Craigslist.
Brainard-Barnes – known as one of the Gilgo Beach Four – was last seen alive in early June 2007 in New York City while Costello was last seen leaving her North Babylon home one day in early September 2010.
Waterman’s final sighting was at a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge in early June 2010.
In July 2011, after seven months, Jessica Taylor’s body was discovered in a forested region of Manorville while authorities were still looking for Gilbert. Taylor’s occupation was an escort in NYC.
Valerie Mack was employed as an escort and was last observed in Philadelphia in 2000. Her body was discovered in two different instances – first in Manorville in 2000 and then in Oak Beach in 2011. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that she was identified using genetic genealogy methods.
Long Island officials declared on August 4, 2023 that they had successfully identified another victim, referred to as Jane Doe 7 or Fire Island Jane Doe.
Karen Vergata, aged 34, was last sighted in Manhattan in 1996 while employed as an escort.
In 1996, her legs were discovered in plastic at Davis Park on Blue Point Beach in Fire Island. Almost 15 years later, on April 11, 2011, her skull was found near Ocean Parkway, in close proximity to other victims of Gilgo Beach.
During a press conference revealing her identity, authorities declined to verify if there is a possible connection between Vergata’s murder and Mr Heuermann.
Some of the individuals affected have not been identified.
The bones of a young man of Asian descent, estimated to be between 17 and 23 years old, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, and with deteriorating teeth, were discovered along Ocean Parkway in April 2011. It is suspected that he passed away approximately five to 10 years prior.
On that day, the body of a young girl was found. She was later recognized as the daughter of the unidentified woman known as “Peaches,” whose body was also found in Nassau County.
Who is the perpetrator responsible for the murders in Gilgo Beach?
On July 13th, a significant development occurred in the case as Mr. Heuermann was ultimately apprehended and indicted for three of the murders, with suspicions of a fourth.
A dramatic video shows him strolling down a road in Manhattan, when he was suddenly surrounded by undercover officers and arrested.
Current information on Gilgo Beach
The alleged murderer has been married twice and has a 26-year-old daughter and stepson, who has special needs, with his second wife Asa Ellerup.
Mr Heuermann is president of architecture firm RH Consultants & Associates, a company which he founded in 1994 and which his adult daughter also works for.
Based on the company’s website, Mr. Heuermann’s business has collaborated with organizations such as Catholic Charities, NYC-DEP Sewerage Treatment, and American Airlines, as well as other prominent tenants at JFK International Airport.
The company’s “Meet The Team” page, which included his picture, was removed when news of his arrest surfaced.
Last year, in a YouTube interview with Bonjour Realty, the man, who is a father of two, mentioned that he grew up in Long Island but has been employed in Manhattan since 1987, which is a considerable amount of time.
The architectural company is located in Midtown Manhattan, the same area where some of the Gilgo Beach victims were last spotted before their deaths.
Based on legal documents, the calls originating from disposable phones and certain victims’ mobile devices can be tracked back to his workplace.
In his career, some colleagues characterized him as conceited while others deemed him “unsettling”.
According to Paul Teitelbaum, who collaborated with Mr. Heuermann on a construction project in Brooklyn Heights, the suspect had a confident demeanor and seemed to believe he was the superior authority, as reported by The New York Times after his arrest.
In the meantime, Dominique Vidal, an interior designer and member of the same architecture networking group as Mr. Heuermann, reported receiving multiple calls and a “creepy” voicemail from him, even though they had never collaborated on any projects.
In a TikTok video shared on Sunday, she mentioned that he had sent her a voicemail at the end of February after she left the group.
“Before that, he contacted me multiple times and I answered the phone. There was nothing particularly important. I found it strange that he was calling since I had no job-related tasks for him. We do not have a current connection, just two individuals who were previously in the same professional network.”
The voicemail is not too frightening, except for the fact that he is the Gilgo Beach killer.
Neighbours of Mr Heuermann in Massapequa Park – which is located just a 20-minute drive from Gilgo Beach where the killer dumped the bodies of his victims – gave a mixed picture of the accused killer following his arrest.
The Independent was informed by neighbors that he was a peaceful family man who resided in the tight-knit community with his spouse and two kids.
A nearby resident, who has lived close to the Heuermanns for over 20 years, stated that the family is very reserved and has had no noticeable impact on the community.
The long-time resident of Massapequa Park stated that they have lived there for 22 years and have never had any interaction with him. They also mentioned that one person’s actions do not reflect the entire neighborhood, which they consider to be a great community.
Another resident, who had been living there for 13 years, shared with Newsweek that local kids would steer clear of his house on Halloween.
According to Barry Auslander, not many people visit this person’s house and kids are even warned to avoid it during Halloween because the person is not very friendly.
He mentioned that his house was run-down and consistently lacking light.
Mr Heuermann has lived on Long Island his whole life – living in the very same property that he grew up in with his wife and two children. He grew up in Massapequa Park and attended Berner High School where Billy Baldwin was a classmate.
Maureen Holpit, 59, who also attended Berner High School with Mr Heuarmann, told The Independent that Mr Heauerman was once a shy teen who would often leave “love notes” in her locker. Ms Holpit said her exchanges with the now suspected serial killer were always pleasant and polite.
“I have always been kind and amiable towards him. It seemed like he was often the target of teasing and some may have perceived him as a bit nerdy. He was very reserved and calm. So, I would kindly greet him and ask how he was doing,” Ms. Holpit, who currently resides in Florida, shares with The Independent.
“I received several unattributed love notes in my locker. Upon reflection, I recall that there were multiple small notes expressing affection. However, they were not signed,” she explained. “Then, one day, I witnessed him placing a note in my locker, confirming that they were indeed from him. I may have mentioned to him that I was in a relationship, or simply that I only saw him as a friend.”
What was the method used to apprehend the suspect in the Gilgo Beach murder case?
In 2022, a joint effort between the Suffolk County Police Department, New York State Police, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI reinvestigated the homicides, resulting in the surprising arrest of Mr. Heuermann.
A recent bail request from the Suffolk County District Attorney uncovered that Mr. Heuermann was connected to the string of murders through evidence from his cellphone and surveillance.
The prosecution maintains that Mr. Heuermann should not be granted bail because of his recent online searches for “sadistic materials, child pornography, and images of the victims and their relatives.”
In March 2022, Mr. Heuermann was initially connected to the unsolved case when investigators found out that a Chevrolet Avalanche registered under his name may have been the vehicle seen by a witness in Costello’s vanishing.
As authorities approached him, they issued over 300 court orders and warrants which revealed cellphone data for disposable phones utilized to schedule meetings with three of the victims known as the “Gilgo Four” prior to their disappearances.
Investigators claim that additional examination has connected Mr. Heuermann to harassing phone calls made to relatives of the victims. These calls originated from the Midtown Manhattan region, where Mr. Heuermann’s architecture company is situated.
New evidence connecting Mr. Heuermann to the killings was discovered through a hair found on the burlap material used to cover Waterman’s body, as stated in court records. Due to limitations in technology at the beginning of the investigation, DNA analysis was not feasible, but advancements now permit testing as of July 2020.
The team monitoring Mr. Heuermann obtained a pizza box that confirmed a DNA match with the suspect on June 12th.
According to records, there were multiple online accounts connected to Mr. Heuermann that used false names and were involved in illegal actions. It is alleged that Mr. Heuermann utilized these accounts and disposable phones to communicate with women for prostitution purposes and to conduct disturbing searches online.
The searches consisted of sadistic and torture-related pornography, child pornography, and other unsettling content.
Mr. Heuermann has also been charged with searching for information on “why law enforcement was unable to track the calls of the long island serial killer,” “why the long island serial killer has not been apprehended,” and “how new phone technology may provide a breakthrough in the case.”
Further examination of evidence showed that the female hair discovered at the three crime scenes was linked to Mr. Heuermann’s spouse. Yet, upon reviewing cell phone records, officials have concluded that Mr. Heuermann’s wife was not present in the state during the time of the killings.
When Barthelemy disappeared in July 2009, Mr. Heuermann’s wife was in Iceland. She also visited Maryland in June 2010 when Waterman went missing, and went to New Jersey in September of that same year when Costello was last seen.
Prosecutors stated that it is probable that the burlap, tape, vehicle(s), or other items used to commit these murders were either obtained from Defendant Heuermann’s home, where his wife also lives, or were passed on from his clothing.
Mr Heuermann is also the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who is believed to be one of the “Gilgo Four.” Prosecutors noted in the application that records for the burner phones used to contact Brainard-Barnes were not obtained at the time she went missing and no longer exist.
Authorities in Suffolk County are currently looking into potential connections between him and the other homicides.
In the meantime, police departments throughout the nation have announced that they are reexamining unresolved cases.
