According to officials, the Biden campaign and the Democratic Party generated over $42m in January through grassroots efforts.
The Democratic party currently holds $130 million in available funds, with the upcoming general election expected to be one of the longest in recent history.
Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager for Biden, stated that the fundraising in January was a clear demonstration of strength as the grassroots fundraising program continues to see growth each month.
The campaign stated that it has collected nearly $278 million since April of last year. It also mentioned that it currently has $130 million in cash, the largest amount of any democratic candidate in history. Additionally, the president’s re-election campaign highlighted that January marked its most successful month for grassroots fundraising.
According to Ms Rodriguez, Team Biden-Harris is focusing on strengthening their fundraising efforts, while Republicans are split between using funds to oppose Donald Trump or support his controversial and unsuccessful agenda. However, their lackluster fundraising results suggest they are already facing consequences. In contrast, President Biden’s campaign is utilizing its resources to create a successful campaign that will effectively engage voters in understanding the importance of this election for our democracy and freedoms.
The reported amount of funds raised includes donations made to the Biden campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and their combined committees.
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden will travel to California for fundraisers in San Francisco and Los Angeles, then return to Washington on Thursday.
The fundraising figures for the campaign were released as the president’s re-election strategy is being restructured, with key White House advisors Mike Donilon and 2020 campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon relocating from Washington to the campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. This move comes as many Democrats express concern over Mr. Biden’s lag in certain polls compared to former President Donald Trump.
In recent polls conducted by Emerson College, YouGov/The Economist, Ipsos/Reuters, and Morning Consult, Mr. Biden’s standing is either tied or slightly trailing behind Mr. Trump.
The campaign announced that they had achieved their highest level of grassroots fundraising for the third consecutive month in January. They also reported a significant increase in their email list, with one million new subscribers. The campaign acknowledged that their donors are motivated by “high-profile moments” and mentioned that they were able to raise $1 million per day for three days following the Iowa Republican caucuses.
In the previous month, the campaign received a total of 502,000 contributions from 422,000 donors. The campaign also mentioned that 97% of the donations were less than $200. So far, a total of 1.1 million donors have made approximately three million contributions since the beginning of the campaign.
The campaign reported a significant increase in the number of regular donors compared to the same time last year. As of now, 158,000 individuals have signed up to contribute on a monthly basis.
Jaime Harrison, Chair of the DNC, pointed out that contributors are driven to give in order to “protect our democracy and uphold our liberties”.
According to a statement released by the campaign, President Biden’s 2020 campaign collected over $1 billion, setting a record for the highest amount raised by a presidential campaign. This amount included $700 million generated through online contributions from small donors.
