In a survey conducted by Adarma, 500 leaders in security operations from UK organizations with more than 2,000 employees were asked about their thoughts on AI. 74% of the respondents expressed difficulty in understanding how AI could assist them with their duties. However, 61% acknowledged that automation could potentially handle up to 30% of security tasks that are typically done by humans, while 17% predicted that AI could take on over 50% of these responsibilities.
As technology advances, there are various perspectives on how it can be utilized. In the case of AI, it is believed by experts that there are two main uses: minimizing human error and false alarms. Despite the fact that most alerts sent to security teams are not valid, they still require human verification.
In a perfect situation, AI would be able to quickly evaluate false positives and determine their accuracy within their particular context. Surprisingly, 53% of participants indicated a desire to reduce the time spent on reporting, which is currently one of the least automated tasks. Additionally, 70% of respondents admitted to not utilizing automation for this task.
This gap offers a chance for AI to be used in automating routine tasks like reporting, which can enhance the satisfaction, efficiency, and effectiveness of security teams. Additionally, 42% of security experts believe that automation can offer better contextual information to assist in making more informed decisions.
One potential use of AI is to help isolate and contain potential threats. When set up properly, it could significantly decrease the likelihood of a threat spreading throughout an organization’s IT system.
Yet, experiencing these benefits depends on security leaders having confidence in the technology. Considering that AI is still in its early stages, it is completely reasonable for leaders to have doubts about relying on this technology to manage important systems.
This is a valid worry for any organization, and it probably stems from the fact that the technology is very new and there is a lack of expertise in AI within the cyber-security field. It will naturally require time to establish confidence in the technology and for security experts to obtain the essential abilities to implement it securely and efficiently.
Surprisingly, individuals who had already begun their automation process reported a decent level of achievement in carrying out their automation projects. However, they did recognize the difficulty and time-consuming aspect of the process. Specifically, 42% found implementing automation to be challenging and time-consuming, and an extra 21% stated that it was more demanding than they had expected. Despite this, a large majority (73%) believed that the time and effort put into automation was ultimately worth it.
These results indicate that security leaders are still adjusting to the idea of AI and are being cautious in their approach. The adoption of any new technology requires careful monitoring by security leaders as they navigate the development of AI. Building confidence and trust in AI’s abilities is still a top concern.
