The city of Kyiv experiences the biggest drone strike carried out by Russia, resulting in five people getting injured.

The Russian military has reportedly changed their strategy for airstrikes from targeting major cities to targeting frontline areas, according to Ukraine’s air force. This comes after eleven individuals, including five children, were killed only 40 miles from some of the most intense fighting.

During the night, Russia deployed 28 unmanned aerial vehicles and launched three missiles, primarily aimed at the southern areas of Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk. These regions are either under Russian occupation or in close proximity to Russian forces.

According to Ukraine Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat, a total of 28 drones were taken down.

The Independent was informed by him that three more missiles were discharged. These were S-300 anti-aircraft guided projectiles that were launched in the Donetsk region, located in the eastern part of Ukraine, near the front line. He chose not to disclose if they were intercepted.

The international community condemned the Russian missile attack on Saturday afternoon, carried out with S-300s, which resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, including 5 children, in Pokrovsky near Donetsk City.

Denise Brown, the United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, expressed deep shock and dismay over the strikes, particularly the loss of innocent children’s lives.

During Orthodox Christmas, Putin promises to support soldiers who “protect” Russia.

On the night before Orthodox Christmas, President Vladimir Putin promised to support soldiers who defend Russia’s interests with weapons, instructing his government to provide more assistance to those who fight. He also urged the people to show mercy and fairness.

During a meeting with families of fallen Russian soldiers in Ukraine, Putin praised our brave and heroic men who continue to defend our country on this holiday while armed.

The media displayed footage of the Russian leader participating in a private midnight service, known as the Divine Liturgy, with a small group of families whose loved ones were soldiers killed in action. This took place at a chapel located in his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo, just outside of Moscow, on Saturday night.

There was no request for a ceasefire in Ukraine from Putin this year to align with the holiday, which is observed by many Orthodox Christians on January 6-7, as it was last year.

The Russian military deployed 28 unmanned aerial vehicles and fired three missiles towards Ukraine, resulting in the destruction of Ukraine’s air force.

Overnight, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia deployed 28 attack drones and three cruise missiles against them. However, Ukraine’s air defence successfully took down 21 of the drones.

The Telegram messaging channel for the air force announced that Russia focused on the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, but did not provide information on the fate of the three cruise missiles that were allegedly launched.

“The adversary has changed their target and is now attacking the territories closest to the front line – drones have been used to attack the regions of Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk,” stated Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, in an interview with national television.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries from both military and civilian authorities.

Mr. Ihnat stated that drones were mainly being eliminated by mobile units, which helped conserve “limited” air defense missiles.

According to him, Ukrainian forces utilized missiles to defend against two recent significant Russian assaults, but efforts are ongoing to ensure that Ukraine has adequate missiles to fend off future air attacks.

In the final days of 2023 and the initial days of 2024, Russia launched approximately 300 missiles and utilized over 200 drones in their attacks.

President Zelensky insists that the frozen Russian assets should be utilized to aid Ukraine.

President Zelensky took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to say that Russia’s frozen assets must be used to support Ukraine. He said that the allocation of $300 billion to Ukraine efforts would be an “entirely just and legitimate response”.

He stated that there are approximately $300 billion of Russian assets frozen outside of the country, and they should be utilized to aid Ukraine.

This presents a significant chance to hold the terrorist state accountable for their actions. The Russian elites and leaders prioritize money over human lives.

The loss of assets will be the most devastating for them. They will realize the power of the global community and understand that the world is stronger than terrorism.

Using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine in response to Russia’s aggression is a fair and lawful choice. This action will convey a powerful message to potential aggressors worldwide: attacking another nation does not come without consequences, it holds the aggressor accountable.

I urge partners to act promptly in implementing appropriate legal frameworks. This year, it is crucial that we make concrete strides towards utilizing frozen Russian assets for the betterment of Ukraine. We place full trust in the G7’s leadership in regards to this issue.
