Nikki Haley has stated that she has no desire to comment on the various legal issues facing Donald Trump. She believes that speculating on how they will impact his campaign for president would be a futile use of energy.
The ex-governor of South Carolina and former candidate for president stated that the decision on whether or not Mr. Trump should have absolute immunity from the accusations against him should be left to the courts.
According to polling data from FiveThirtyEight, the ex-president is currently the frontrunner for the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination with a significant lead of 62.4%. Former governor Ron DeSantis holds third place with 10.9%, while Ms. Haley ranks third.
Ms Haley recently gained the support of New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, which she described as a significant endorsement.
During an interview with ABC News regarding her endorsement, Ms. Haley was questioned about Mr. Trump’s numerous legal cases and whether he should have “absolute immunity.”
The ex-governor of South Carolina and candidate for president stated that it is the responsibility of the courts to determine if Mr. Trump should be granted absolute immunity, which he believes he should receive.
“I will allow the court to handle that,” she stated. “I have no intention of giving my opinion or familiarizing myself with the specifics of his legal cases as there are 91 charges involved.”
I believe the matter at hand is whether or not the president is granted immunity. Does this immunity extend beyond their presidency? At what specific point does this protection end? I will defer to the judges for a ruling as I am uncertain of the answer.
She stated: “President Trump will have to defend himself, regardless of the circumstances.”
If he is convicted, he is convicted. If he is acquitted, he is acquitted. It would be unproductive for me to dwell on legal proceedings instead of strategizing on how to succeed in the room we just left.
“I am not currently involved in a legal dispute. I am glad that I do not have to be held accountable for it. Therefore, he should be the one to address it.”
When discussing the riots at the Capitol on January 6 and the potential involvement of Mr. Trump, Ms. Haley emphasized the importance of leadership and stated that ultimately, people want the truth.
The request from special counsel Jack Smith to make a decision on former President Trump’s “immunity” claim in his case of election subversion has been accepted by the US Supreme Court for prompt consideration. Mr. Trump is seeking dismissal of the case.
