Authorities have reported that a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the death of a student from Augusta University College of Nursing, whose body was discovered on the University of Georgia campus.
Earlier today, law enforcement were observed combing the vicinity of a residential building in Athens following their disclosure of a suspect in the murder investigation of 22-year-old Laken Riley.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been disclosed. A press conference will take place at 7pm ET to share further information about the situation.
The University of Georgia announced on its website that the individual suspected of murdering Laken Riley has been apprehended by the University of Georgia Police Department. According to the university, there are currently no signs of any ongoing danger to the UGA campus related to this incident.
On Thursday morning, Riley went for a run at the university’s intramural fields and did not come back.
According to University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffrey L Clark, her roommate contacted the police at noon after becoming worried. This information was shared during a previous press conference.
According to Chief Clark, Riley’s remains were discovered at approximately 12:38pm in a forested section behind Lake Herrick.
The UGAPD is collaborating with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as they continue their investigation. On Friday, the Athens coroner revealed that Riley’s body was brought to the GBI Crime Lab in DeKalb County.
The reason and circumstances of her death will be determined after an investigation of the body by Coroner Sonny Wilson, set to take place on Friday.
According to The New York Times, Riley was enrolled in nursing school at Augusta University in Athens, rather than being a student at the University of Georgia.
Augusta University announced a collaboration with UGA that permits students to engage in UGA campus events.
The university cancelled classes on Friday and plans to resume them on Monday.
