A car mechanic who lived a solitary life was sentenced to 16 years in prison for operating disturbing websites that promoted child abuse on the dark web.
Nathan Bake, a 28-year-old individual, was part of a team of moderators based in the UK for a website known as “The Annex.” This website had 90,000 members worldwide and was used for sharing disturbing images, such as the abuse of infants and young children.
Bake was the deputy moderator of the website, as the primary moderator. The website was managed by an individual from the United States who was convicted to a lifetime in prison in January.
Bake, a resident of Cheshire, was sentenced to 16 years in prison at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday. This was after admitting to 12 counts of facilitating and producing websites on the dark web for the purpose of distributing content depicting child abuse.
Judge Patrick Thompson stated that in today’s society, with the widespread availability of news, it is rare for the public to be shocked. However, this case is an exception.
Individuals are disgusted by any type of offense that involves sexual exploitation of children and those who derive pleasure from such acts.
Anna Pope, the prosecutor, informed the court that Bake oversaw a team of approximately 30 employees who were responsible for enforcing the rules of The Annex. She described the operation as “sophisticated and well-structured.”
Users would first go to a “gateway”, accessed through the Tor browser, and would have to “gain the trust” of those managing the site before being promoted to other areas, with names such as “Tots ‘R’ Us” and “No Limits”.
Investigators in the situation stated that this typically included exchanging a particular quantity of explicit images involving child abuse in order to gain approval from moderators.
Pink, also known as Bake, responded to questions from fellow users on the site and provided tips on avoiding being caught.
One of his posts stated: “Let’s see what you have for HAPPY HOUR. Show us your favorite guys and girls.”
Mark Edmondson, the primary officer of the National Crime Agency involved in the investigation, stated that the individual in question appears to prefer being alone. He had a job during the day and would spend most of his evenings on these websites, often logging on as soon as he returned from work and staying on them until the early hours of the morning.
The website’s additional moderators included Kabir Garg, a psychiatrist residing in Lewisham, a district in south-east London. Garg was sentenced to six years in prison last year.
In 2020, American law enforcement officials discovered a website on a server in Romania, which later moved to a server in Moldova. This site contained disturbing content involving the abuse of infants and young children, known as “hurtcore”, which includes violent acts.
Adam Priestley, commander of the NCA branch, stated that there were no restrictions on the website and everything was actively encouraged.
The individuals we are discussing were members of a group – a team that is typically found in any organization – who created a platform and supported a community of child predators to promote the exploitation of children globally.
The NCA is currently in talks with the Home Office to revise laws regarding the management and oversight of websites where child pornography is being distributed.
Bake marks the initial NCA instance in which a defendant faced charges for involvement in an organized crime organization in a case of this nature.
He suggested that it would be easier if there were updated laws specifically addressing these offenses.
During court proceedings, it was reported that over 3.6 million inappropriate images were discovered on devices found in Bake’s residence after his arrest in November 2022. Additionally, children’s clothing items such as tights, underwear, and sandals were found in the bottom drawer of his computer desk.
According to Ms Pope, he was also a moderator for another website and helped create a third one called Lolita’s Paradise.
Keith Jones, the defense attorney, stated that Bake, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at 16, had embraced Islam, was learning Arabic, and was finding solace in the scriptures.
He stated that he recognizes his actions as morally unacceptable.
The judge, Thompson, deemed Bake to be a dangerous criminal and mandated a four-year extension to their license period.
He informed him: “You are a dedicated child abuser who poses a significant threat of causing severe harm to children.”
