Britney Spears shares the story behind her coordinated double-denim outfit with Justin Timberlake.

Britney Spears recently reminisced about the famous double-denim ensemble she donned with her then-partner Justin Timberlake back in 2001.

Spears and Timberlake – who were dating at the time – attended the American Music Awards together and quickly made headlines with their showstopping outfits. The pair wore matching head-to-toe denim looks, including a blue denim cowboy hat on Timberlake.

The iconic occasion of wearing double denim has become a notable fashion statement, inspiring individuals to recreate the style for Halloween couple outfits.

In her new memoir, The Woman In Me, Spears recalls the star-studded fashion moment and reveals that it was originally brought up as a joke by her to Timberlake and their stylist.

“I can’t believe Justin was going to wear denim and I suggested, ‘We should match! Let’s both wear denim-on-denim!'” she clarified.

Initially, I believed it was a prank. I never expected my stylist to actually follow through, and I certainly didn’t anticipate Justin joining in as well. However, they both fully committed to the idea.

Spears continued: “The stylist brought Justin’s all-denim outfit, including a denim hat to match his denim jacket and denim pants. When he put it on, I thought, Whoa! I guess we’re really doing this!”

During this period, the popular singer was rising to fame and gaining recognition, while Timberlake was a heartthrob known worldwide as the lead singer of the boy band NSYNC. They were seen together at numerous red carpet occasions during their four-year relationship from 1998 to 2002.

“I always went to events with Justin,” Spears shared. “We had a blast at the Teen Choice Awards and loved coordinating our outfits. However, our matching denim outfit caused quite a stir.”

Spears described the tightness of the denim corset she donned at the event as so extreme that she feared she might topple over while walking the red carpet.

She stated, “I understand that it may have been tasteless, but it was also amusing in its own way. I always enjoy seeing it being mocked as a Halloween outfit.”

Spears proceeded to address the backlash Timberlake received for sporting the coordinated attire.

“Justin has received criticism for his appearance. During a podcast where he was being teased about it, he responded with ‘You do a lot of things when you’re young and in love.’ And that’s the truth. We were filled with excitement and those outfits reflected that,” Spears stated.

The couple started a romantic relationship after becoming acquainted on the set of the All-New Mickey Mouse Club in 1992.

In a different section of the memoir, Spears discussed her choice to terminate a pregnancy while in a relationship with Timberlake.

She stated that the pregnancy was unexpected, but not a tragedy for her. She had strong feelings for Justin and had always envisioned starting a family with him in the future. However, this event was happening sooner than she had planned.

“Justin was clearly displeased with the news of the pregnancy. He expressed that we were not prepared for a baby in our current stage of life and that we were too young.”

It seemed that Spears was suggesting that she chose to have an abortion because it was what Timberlake had asked of her.

“I understand that my decision may not be popular, but I made an agreement to not have the baby. I question if it was the right choice,” she expressed in her memoir. “If it were solely up to me, I would not have gone through with it. However, Justin was adamant about not wanting to become a father.”

She stated that it remains one of the most excruciating experiences she has ever had in her life.
