A woman named Lexi shared a TikTok hack that she learned on the app, but some other travelers are wondering about its safety.
The video displays a woman relaxing in her airplane seat, with her feet resting on the seat and her shoes off. The seatbelt is secured around her ankles. A message on the screen reads, “I owe my life to whoever suggested using the seatbelt around your ankles.” This indicates that she found the hack to be helpful.
After the video was uploaded, it garnered more than 20 million views. Numerous viewers commented on the level of safety of the hack.
One person commented, “When I unbuckle it, my knees would feel like grenades.” Another person wrote, “I don’t think that’s safe.”
According to a commenter, the hack could potentially lead to a medical emergency.
A flight attendant also shared their thoughts, commenting, “As a flight attendant, I kindly ask that you don’t.”
Several people expressed doubts about the comfort level of that position. One commenter stated, “It’s definitely not as comfortable as just sitting for a long time.” Lexi explained, “I personally have to sleep with my legs elevated and usually tuck my feet behind the seat. I can’t sleep while sitting, it’s too uncomfortable. However, this was only a three-hour flight.”
A fellow TikTok user recently shared a humorous travel tip on how to avoid having someone sit next to you on a flight.
The hack was first reported on the travel-focused TikTok account for The Upgrade (@theupgrade_), a news website that specializes in travel-related content. The website defines itself as “a top independent source for travel news, delivering the latest and most pertinent information for travelers worldwide since 2017.”
A video that has since been taken down gained 6.7 million views, in which a woman demonstrated how she cleverly secured a flight without a seatmate. Accompanied by the viral quote from Kim Kardashian, “Because it’s iconic and I love to do iconic s***!”, the woman is shown smiling in the video while the caption reads, “When I purchase three seats that can be refunded and then cancel two right before departure.”
Kashlee Kucheran, creator of The Upgrade, clarified to the Daily Dot that the video was taken down due to it being interpreted as a “satire and joke” instead of its intended purpose.
Ivanna, our social media manager, created the video as a fun parody on TikTok when she happened to have a whole row to herself while flying. She shared with the outlet that “everyone dreams of having a row all to themselves” and she was grateful to have that experience on her last flight. The video was her playful take on that day.
Kucheran stated that the video was removed with good intentions to prevent individuals from considering the social media parody as credible.
The video caused disagreement and controversy before it was removed by the outlet. One individual commented: “That is not considered iconic. There are individuals who require seats in order to visit their loved ones, and your self-centeredness hinders them from doing so.”
