Currently, fringes are a popular trend, ranging from sleek and short box bobs to soft and sweeping curtain bangs.
If you want a timeless, fashionable bangs style, Claudia Winkleman is the perfect source of inspiration.
The host, who is making a comeback on television this month with the BBC One show The Traitors, has been sporting her signature face-framing hairstyle for approximately two decades. She suggests that everyone should give the daring bangs style a chance.
In 2021, she advised PA Media to go ahead and take action without hesitation. However, she also emphasized the importance of not feeling sorry for it. Having a few unusual or unconventional elements in your style is acceptable for young children, but as adults, it is not something to be ashamed of.
Hair stylists are just as passionate about the transformative effects of a bang.
“Take the plunge!” encourages Desmond Grundy, a renowned hairstylist and ambassador for Bristows.
Fringes are universally flattering and enhance all face shapes and hair types. They have the ability to make you look younger by concealing forehead lines and signs of aging.
One may desire to adjust the length or appearance of their bangs based on their face shape, hair texture, and daily styling commitment.
Before getting a haircut, there are certain factors you should take into account.
Face shape
Don’t be deceived into believing that you can’t pull off a fringe – you simply need to discover the perfect style for your facial structure.
According to Stéphane Ferreira, a hair stylist and colour specialist at Live True London, a full fringe similar to Claudia’s is an excellent choice for individuals with shorter face shapes as it can make the face appear longer.
“For individuals with different face shapes, a full fringe can still be a suitable choice. However, I suggest experimenting with the thickness and shape to draw attention to various features of the face.”
A more choppy look may be most suitable for those with round face shapes, according to him. “A fringe similar to Claudia’s, with rounded edges, could potentially appear too bulky, but it could also serve as a way to hide a larger forehead.”
According to Grundy, a fringe can be used to balance out the shape of the face. This can be achieved by cutting it higher to give the appearance of a taller forehead, soften the angles of a square face, and make a narrow face appear rounder.
According to Ferreira, Claudia has thick hair, which gives her bangs a full and voluminous appearance.
Keeping this specific style for curly hair may require more effort, as you will need to straighten your hair daily in order to achieve Claudia’s smooth appearance. Alternatively, for those with curls, I suggest embracing your natural texture by incorporating a curly bang.
If you have thin hair, a thick bang may not be suitable. The expert suggests, “I recommend using the right amount of hair for the bangs to prevent it from looking thin in other areas.”
Maintenance
Maintaining fringes can be quite difficult, and it is likely that you will need to style your fringe daily, even if you leave the rest of your hair untouched, according to Ferreira.
“You may also want to consider purchasing new hair styling products and mastering new techniques in order to maintain your fringe.”
Additionally, it is necessary to get frequent haircuts, typically every two to three weeks, in order to prevent your hair from obstructing your vision. Fortunately, many hair stylists offer complimentary trims after your first haircut.
Nonetheless, there are numerous added perks.
Grundy states that although maintaining a fringe may be necessary, it also effortlessly enhances your appearance and creates an instant “look”.
“Having a fringe can reduce the amount of maintenance needed for eyebrows and also enhance the eyes by drawing attention to them directly. This is why Claudia’s appearance is successful with her dark fringe and eye makeup.”
The amount of styling and upkeep needed for your hair will vary based on its type.
According to Grundy, having naturally straight hair means you only need one blow dry brush to maintain a smooth and straight fringe.
“If you have naturally wavy hair, using a light hold hair spray can help to keep your bangs in place and prevent them from getting unruly, while still allowing for some natural movement.”
Ferreira suggests dividing straight or wavy hair into smaller sections before using a blow dryer, and clipping your bangs out of the way.
“First, dry and design the majority of your hair to your liking. Once your hair is completely dry, focus on styling the fringe, using additional water if necessary.”
“Make sure to aim the blow dryer directly downwards and brush through your hair to achieve a smooth appearance.”
For those with curly or coily hair, Grundy advises using a diffuser or letting it air dry. The goal is to maintain the natural shape of the hair, so minimal manipulation is best. A few gentle finger combing and a light hold spray can also help achieve the desired look.
Regardless of your hair texture, there is one crucial item you must have if you are planning to get bangs.
According to Grundy, dry shampoo is the ideal companion for your bangs because they tend to become greasy faster than the rest of your hair due to contact with your skin.
A quick spray can instantly refresh your bangs, allowing you to go longer without washing your hair and maintaining your bangs’ shape without restyling.
