A five-year-old boy with autism developed a strong interest in the Venus flytrap featured in John Lewis’s Christmas advertisement. He watches the ad multiple times a day and has expressed gratitude to the company for sending him Snapper-themed gifts.
Tommy Lamb’s mother, Bethany Lamb, 30, from South Shields in South Tyneside, shared that her son has developed a strong affection for Snapper, the playful Venus flytrap featured in the department store’s holiday advertisement. She noted that he watches the ad multiple times and excitedly exclaims “back” when it ends.
The employees of John Lewis were deeply moved and decided to send Tommy a care package filled with Snapper-themed pajamas and a plush toy.
Ms Lamb informed the PA news agency that her son brings a stuffed animal named Snapper to bed each night and often attempts to bring it to school in the mornings.
As soon as he returns home, he immediately starts talking and requesting to have Snapper again, repeating his desire for it. He is also joyfully reunited with his new gift from John Lewis.
“When he colors, Snapper is present. When he reads, Snapper is there. He is fixated on it. It is wonderful to witness the happiness it brings him.”
The child, who is five years old, made a custom thank-you card for the employees at the store as a way of showing his gratitude for the gifts he received. The card included a hand-drawn illustration of Snapper and was personally delivered to the Newcastle branch.
He and his mother, accompanied by his 54-year-old grandmother Michelle, were able to view the Snapper toys on display.
According to Ms Lamb, he may have difficulty engaging with objects and forming relationships. However, this playful and cunning individual has captured his affection.
She stated, “While some may find watching the John Lewis advert 500 times a day excessive, for Tommy, it remains just as exciting each time.”
Tommy declared it to be the best day ever after visiting Snapper at John Lewis, but it seemed that it wasn’t enough. As soon as we arrived home, before I could even take off my coat, he excitedly pointed at the TV and exclaimed “Snapper!” before resuming watching it on loop.
Charlotte Lock, the customer director at John Lewis, expressed her excitement over the impact of our advert on Tommy and his family. She also praised the wonderful card he created.
“Our advertisement showcases the joy of evolving Christmas traditions, and it is heartwarming that Snapper the Venus flytrap from our commercial will also be incorporated into Tommy’s holiday celebrations.”
Ms. Lamb expressed, “I am filled with joy and gratitude for everything John Lewis has done for Tommy. It truly is enchanting. I never imagined that a Venus flytrap could evoke such strong emotions in me! I am extremely proud of Tommy.”
