To sum it up, this hotel is located by the river and offers some of the most beautiful views in the city. Despite its grand appearance, it has a surprisingly laid-back and comfortable atmosphere.
The neighbourhood
Although Vienna may be the initial choice for a weekend getaway in Austria, Salzburg offers a more picturesque experience. The sparkling Salzach river flows through the city, surrounded by stunning baroque architecture and impressive buildings in the Old Town. The iconic Fortress Hohensalzburg looms above, with the majestic backdrop of the rocky Alps. In addition to its scenic charm, Salzburg is renowned as the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for The Sound of Music. Fans of classical music can tour the composer’s childhood home or attend a concert in a venue where he once performed. For movie enthusiasts, there are numerous locations to visit where they can sing along to “Do-Re-Mi.”
There is plenty to explore and experience in this highly pedestrian-friendly city. You can hike up the hill or use the funicular to reach the fortress and learn about its history while enjoying views of the Old Town. Renting bikes and taking a leisurely ride along the river is also a great way to spend your time. Don’t forget to take a stroll through the picturesque Mirabell Gardens and relax at one of the many traditional beer halls. We visited during the end of summer, but the city is even more bustling in the fall and winter with tourists coming to attend the renowned Oktoberfest events and Christmas markets.
The Hotel Sacher Salzburg sits in the center of the city, overlooking the Old Town across the river. Its strategic location allows for easy access to popular attractions, making it an ideal starting point for sightseeing. Positioned alongside the water’s edge, just a short stroll from the Lover’s Locks bridge, the grand five-star hotel boasts an impressive facade, reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film.
Initially, Hotel Sacher Salzburg gives off the impression of being a sophisticated and elegant establishment. The entrance is staffed by doormen dressed in traditional attire, the lobby is adorned with luxurious antique furniture and mosaic tile flooring, and there are crystal chandeliers and traditional Austrian artwork on display.
It is a place where one would anticipate a strict dress code for breakfast. Despite arriving after a delayed flight and a long train ride from Vienna, one may feel out of place. However, upon closer inspection, it is actually a laid-back and cozy atmosphere with cheerful and relaxed staff ready to accommodate your needs. They are also respectful of those who prefer a more independent travel experience. Our initial perception was proven wrong when we discovered that children and pets are not only permitted, but also encouraged to stay, with extra special accommodations for both young and furry guests.
The hotel offers special touches for families, including a check-in experience for children upon arrival and a welcome gift of a teddy bear or rubber duck dressed as a Sacher doorman. Children are encouraged to explore the hotel with a guide booklet that takes them on an adventure among the antique furniture, and all of the hotel’s restaurants have menus for children. The hotel also caters to canine guests, providing dog baskets, leashes, bowls, and even dog sitters. This is a place for everyone, from families to couples to solo travelers with their furry companions. We even saw a large group of guests arriving on an organized coach tour.
It is not surprising to find a welcoming atmosphere for families and dogs at the Sacher hotels, given the history of the founder’s wife Anna Sacher, who was a known dog enthusiast, and the fact that the family’s children grew up exploring the hotels. The first Hotel Sacher was established in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, and it quickly gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious hotels in Vienna, catering to celebrities, royals, politicians, and members of high society. The Hotel Sacher Salzburg originally opened as the “Österreichischer Hof” in 1886, but it joined the Sacher empire in 1988 and received its current name in 2000.
The Sacher hotels are currently owned by the Gürtler and Winkler families, making it a long-standing family business. Even after more than 100 years, different family members continue to manage different aspects of the business. Alexandra Winkler oversaw a significant renovation of Hotel Sacher Salzburg in celebration of its 150th anniversary. As a tribute to its history, the hotel offers top-notch service and luxurious surroundings akin to a five-star hotel.
Bed and bath
Rooms all lead off the grand central atrium with its gold banisters and sweeping, carpeted stairwell showcased by the sunlight pouring through the vast, glass roof overhead. Every one of the 111 rooms is different, ranging from deluxe rooms at one end of the scale to one and two-bedroom suites in the mid-range and then the spectacular Sacher Sky Suite penthouse complete with its own vast terrace at the other. Many come with balconies and sweeping views across either the river on one side or the opera house on the other.
Regarding the decor, the rooms maintain the customary Austrian design and highlight the work of local creators and artists. This can be seen through hand-crafted curtains, animal-inspired wallpapers, and timeless furniture. There are also modern elements such as a TV in the bathroom, a tablet for communication with the concierge, and an electronic do not disturb option.
The rooms at this hotel are very consistent with the brand, with fluffy white robes, towels, and slippers all featuring the Hotel Sacher’s gold embroidery. Even the Nespresso machine and complimentary minibar items, such as pistachio nuts, are branded with Hotel Sacher. A special and unique touch is the custom Time to Chocolate bath products, leaving you smelling as heavenly as the hotel’s renowned Sacher-Torte after a day of sightseeing.
Food and drink
No stay at Hotel Sacher, or in Salzburg in general, is complete without trying the Original Sacher-Torte. This famous chocolate cake, created in 1832 through a secret 34-step process, draws people from far and wide to taste its unique flavor. It’s common to see a line of people waiting outside Cafe Sacher for a slice, and the wait is definitely worth it. In addition to the cake itself, a visit to Cafe Sacher will transport you back to the golden age of Austrian coffee culture with its luxurious velvet seats and wall of photos featuring famous individuals who have visited the cafe.
There are numerous alternatives for dining. The Sacher Grill restaurant has a contemporary atmosphere and serves classic Austrian cuisine. We highly suggest trying their signature dish, Wiener Schnitzel, and the renowned SalzBurger. Finish off your meal with a deliciously spiced apple strudel and pair it with a local schnapps.
The hotel also features a bar that offers creative variations of traditional cocktails. Both hotel guests and locals often visit this New York-inspired speakeasy for a drink. Additionally, the Sacher Zirbelzimmer restaurant serves authentic Austrian dishes and seasonal cuisine in a charming wood-paneled room decorated with hunting trophies.
Reworded: The breakfast offering includes a variety of freshly baked pastries, bread, and cake, along with cured fish, spreads, continental options, and a wide selection of cereals and teas. In addition to the buffet, guests can also order dishes to their liking. They can also enjoy prosecco, Viennese coffee, freshly squeezed juices, or specialty teas on the outdoor terrace by the river or inside the restaurant with a view of the river.
Public areas
In addition to the various dining options available and the temptation to spend time admiring the stunning views from your room, the hotel has recently added a new health club during their renovations. To access it, take the designated elevator to the basement, ensuring privacy as you won’t have to pass through the lobby in your robe. The health club features a serene atmosphere with black, cream, and pink decor and offers services such as massages and personal training. Guests are welcome to use the gym equipment or relax in the sauna and steam bath at their convenience. For a little adventure, guests can take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary branded bikes for a ride along the river. The lobby areas are also perfect for unwinding, even when fully occupied, thanks to the luxurious decor providing a peaceful setting.

Bottom line
One of the highlights is undoubtedly the charming and cozy rooms and suites, which may make it difficult to resist simply lounging and admiring the stunning views. And let’s not forget about the heavenly Original Sacher-Torte.
One drawback is that the communication upon arrival could be improved. Although the hotel has a laid-back atmosphere and the staff is not too overbearing, the Hotel Sacher Salzburg misses an opportunity by not informing guests about some of the lesser-known benefits upon arrival (such as bike rentals).

Instagram from: The spectacular views from the rooms and terraces.
