Xabi Alonso has had to face the press immediately following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of his impending resignation from Liverpool – with the Spaniard immediately presented as the favourite for the job in summer 2024.
The midfielder who won the World Cup played at Anfield for five seasons. This makes him a top candidate for consideration among the general population and the favored choice according to bookmakers’ odds.
Klopp has urged Liverpool to concentrate on their upcoming matches and the possibility of winning trophies this season. Meanwhile, Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen squad is also vying for significant achievements, making a potential move to a different challenging team at the end of the season even more enticing.
During his pre-game media briefing, Alonso shifted the focus away from any talks of potential transfers and emphasized his focus on getting ready for their next Bundesliga match against Borussia Monchengladbach.
The speaker acknowledged that speculation is common, but he is currently focused on Bayer Leverkusen. He also expressed contentment with his team at Leverkusen.
“I was pleasantly surprised by what Jurgen achieved in Liverpool, and I have a great deal of respect and admiration for him.”
Regarding the possibility of a future transfer, Alonso stated that he is currently content with his position at Leverkusen.
I am currently not focused on planning my next move. I am content and happy where I am and believe it is where I should be. That is all I can say. As for what the future holds, I am uncertain and not concerned about it right now.
After playing 18 matches, Leverkusen is currently in first place in the Bundesliga, with a four-point lead over reigning champions Bayern Munich – who have won the last 11 German titles. The last time Leverkusen came in second place was in 2011 and they have never won the top division. They have only achieved one major domestic cup win in their history, the 1993 DFB-Pokal, and their only other trophy was the 1988 Uefa Cup.
