The manager of Burnley, Vincent Kompany, shared his disappointment following his team’s 1-1 draw at their home ground due to a contentious late goal scored by Carlton Morris.
In the closing moments of the game, Morris entered the goal after Adebayo and Trafford collided. Despite referee Tony Harrington’s review with VAR, the goal was still counted.
Kompany expressed confusion about the inconsistency in foul calls, citing the penalty given against Aston Villa in their 3-2 loss on December 30 as an example.
The referee should have prevented the goalkeeper from getting up, but this does not diminish the impressive performance by Luton today. However, the referee’s decision at that moment was crucial.
“I believe any former professional athlete would acknowledge the actions of the striker in this situation, as they successfully created space for the other striker.”
Kompany’s team, who were winning against their fellow relegation contenders thanks to Zeki Amdouni’s goal in the 36th minute, stated: “My first expectation is for the referee to notice it, as it was extremely clear.”
The players from Luton have not shown any signs of celebration. The striker glances at the referee to check if he has successfully avoided punishment.
Thankfully, we have VAR which we believe will resolve the issue. However, there was a lack of decision and as a result, the score became 1-1.
I am completely okay with allowing this goal as long as it follows the rules and is permissible. If it is something that all teams are able to do, then I will instruct my players to do it as well.
“We lost points at Villa due to a questionable red card and penalty against us, and this pattern continues to occur.”
“I find myself wondering, ‘what should I say to my players?’. I am struggling to comprehend what caused their performance to decline in the past few weeks and what is causing it now. The frustration I am feeling right now is challenging to conceal and even harder to process.”
