Jurgen Klopp has announced that Diogo Jota will be unavailable for several months due to injury, adding to a list of three other Liverpool players who will also miss important matches against Luton and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final this week.
In recent weeks, the Reds have been facing several injuries. However, in the 4-1 win against Brentford, Mohamed Salah was the standout performer as he made his comeback from a hamstring injury he suffered while playing for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, Jota and Curtis Jones will also be absent alongside Alisson for both matches during this pivotal week for the top-ranked team in the Premier League.
Klopp had previously assured that Caoimhin Kelleher will be the goalkeeper – however, Liverpool will be missing a minimum of seven players at Wembley on Sunday.
During a match, Brentford captain Christian Norgaard accidentally landed on Jota, who is currently Liverpool’s second leading scorer of the season, causing injury.
The player from Portugal has netted five times in his past seven games. Klopp shared that the striker will be out of commission for an extended period of time. He stated, “Diogo’s recovery will likely take several months instead of weeks.”
Alisson and Jones, who were both injured before the Brentford game and during the break on Saturday, are expected to have longer recovery periods on the sideline.
“It’s not ideal,” he stated. “Unfortunately, Ali is not an option due to a muscle injury. The timeframe for his recovery is uncertain at this point. Diogo also has a knee problem that has ruled him out, and Curtis has a bone ligament issue that has also ruled him out. We will have to take each day as it comes with the other players. For Curtis, the next few days will be crucial – day five and day 10 are particularly important – and we will reassess his situation based on his pain level. So I cannot give a definite timeframe for his return.”
Klopp mentioned that Jones, who had been a regular starter in nine out of the last 10 games for Liverpool, had become an important player in the midfield. He also stated that Dominik Szoboszlai would most likely not recover in time for the Carabao Cup final, where vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold will also be unable to play.
“Trent and Dom, who have been out for a longer period of time, are making progress towards returning to the team, but they have not yet joined in on team training,” he stated.
Football player Darwin Nunez was substituted during the game against Brentford due to a precautionary measure, according to manager Klopp. There is a possibility that he will be available for the next game against Luton. However, players Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are still unable to play due to injuries.
