Erik ten Hag acknowledges the need to solve a defensive conundrum for the upcoming Manchester derby on Sunday.
Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all injured and unable to play. Manchester United manager Ten Hag will most likely choose the same team from their recent FA Cup win against Nottingham Forest for their upcoming game.
On Wednesday, Sofyan Amrabat moved back to the left side of the United team, while Diogo Dalot remained on the right.
Ten Hag stated on the Manchester United website: “We need to piece together the puzzle as we are currently lacking full-backs and centre-halves. We must think outside the box, but I believe we are capable. Our performance on Wednesday demonstrated that, with the appropriate strategy.”
“However, what’s even more crucial is having the passion, drive, and determination to win the game, as that enables us to succeed.”
United’s strongest performance this season was brought to an end last weekend with a 2-1 loss to Fulham, dealing a significant setback to their aspirations of securing a spot in the Champions League.
A visit to the Etihad Stadium poses a tough challenge for United, who have given up a total of 10 goals in their previous two trips. Despite the disappointing loss to Fulham, Ten Hag has confidence in their ability to bounce back.
He expressed frustration, saying, “Naturally, it’s bothersome.” He added, “That match against Fulham still bothers me. But it’s in the past and we must also remember what led up to it.”
Starting in January, we have been performing exceptionally well and maintaining a positive streak. We were able to recover from our previous defeat at Forest and must continue to build on this momentum. We are excited for upcoming games that will pose as great challenges.
“The team is feeling a lot of excitement about this opportunity. I am also looking forward to our upcoming game, as well as future matches. However, Sunday’s game holds great significance.”
