Sven Botman, Newcastle’s defender, is set to undergo knee surgery and could be out of action for up to nine months.
The Magpies have officially announced that the 24-year-old Dutch player will have a surgery to fix his anterior cruciate ligament next week. He sustained the injury during Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
In the summer of 2022, Botman joined the team as a £32million transfer from Lille. He had just recovered from a knee injury he suffered in September.
The club’s official website released a statement stating that Newcastle United’s defender, Sven Botman, will have surgery next week due to a knee injury sustained during a match against Manchester City.
“After conducting a more thorough evaluation, a scan has verified that he suffered an ACL injury in Saturday’s game. He is predicted to recover and resume activity within a time frame of six to nine months.”
“The Dutch centre-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan – a decision which saw him return to action in December.
“All of us at Newcastle United send our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to Sven.”
The announcement will be devastating for head coach Eddie Howe.
After a break of nearly three months, Botman resumed playing in December, but has encountered difficulties in reaching the level of performance he had in his initial season at Tyneside. During that time, he had a significant impact in helping the club secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.
He is the most recent addition to Howe’s team to experience an extended absence this season, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is still recovering from a shoulder injury and midfielder Joelinton and striker Callum Wilson are also out of action for a significant amount of time.
Furthermore, several players including Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, and Harvey Barnes have all been sidelined for extended periods due to injuries. Additionally, Sandro Tonali, who was acquired during the summer transfer window, is currently serving a 10-month suspension for violating betting rules.
