Tottenham’s streak of five winless matches was broken with a precise and dominant display in a convincing victory against a struggling and injury-ridden Newcastle team.
The long-awaited celebration for Spurs fans came to an end after a tough month of no wins. Goals from Destiny Udogie, Son Heung-min, and two from Richarlison showcased a well-played game and earned the team three points.
Although Richarlison had difficulties maintaining a steady performance at Tottenham, only scoring five goals in his past 48 games, he managed to score twice and help secure a crucial win for Spurs.
It did not look the same Newcastle who tested Paris Saint Germain and were disappointed to have left France with only a point, nor the one who beat Manchester United at the start of the month but, more problematically, it was. The Magpies’ injury crisis has not allowed for any significant deviation from the starting XI who have played the last four games, and the last two matches have shown it is just too much for the severely injury-depleted squad.
Kieran Trippier was exhausted in the final 10 minutes of Newcastle’s defeat to Everton on Thursday, and only three days later he had to face Son. Regrettably, the 33-year-old was once again partly responsible for the first two goals.
The midfield was completely controlled by the Spurs, and even though Newcastle had more opportunities, once Udogie scored in the 26th minute, the outcome was certain.
Before the half-hour mark, Tottenham had not produced any significant chances, except for a header by Cristian Romero that was cleared by Miguel Almiron. However, they were able to break through the defense shortly after.
The Son’s return created issues throughout the evening in north London. After being pushed to the side by Trippier, he successfully passed the ball to Udogie for a goal.
The coach, Ange Postecoglou, had high praises for player number seven. He felt that Sonny’s positive attitude and leadership on the field set the tone for the team. This resulted in a more aggressive and effective attack in the opponent’s territory. The coach also believed that the team deserved their goals and could have even scored more.
The goal incited both Tottenham and their supporters, breaking the previous quietness of the match. Up until then, the fans had only expressed their frustration over a few free kicks against their team.
The team playing at home came close to scoring a second goal within four minutes when Brennan Johnson’s pass almost reached Pape Matar Sarr’s feet, but the shot missed the target from less than five yards away.
Newcastle’s danger remained apparent, and a clever collaboration between Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Miguel Almiron nearly resulted in a tie, but Almiron’s shot lacked force and was stopped.
Tottenham showcased their skill once again as Richarlison poked the ball into the net for their second goal. Trippier attempted to clear the ball with a header, but was unable to stop Son, who passed it back to Richarlison for a successful shot.
Johnson attempted to increase the score in the first half, but his shot narrowly missed the goal. Newcastle appeared fatigued from playing multiple games in a short period of time. Richarlison also had an opportunity to score for Spurs right before halftime, but his dive missed the ball entirely.
At the start of the second half, Newcastle appeared rejuvenated, but their efforts were not enough as Richarlison sealed the game with an impressive third goal at the 60-minute mark. He skillfully controlled the ball and scored after receiving a long pass from Pedro Porro.
They came close to scoring a fourth goal just two minutes later, which would have been a perfect end to their precise performance. Unfortunately, Johnson’s curved shot hit the crossbar, and Son had a chance that narrowly missed the goal.
Son successfully scored a penalty in the 85th minute of the match, placing the ball neatly into the corner of the net past Martin Dubravka, and bringing his total Premier League goals to 113, tying with Ian Wright. The opposing team, Newcastle, managed to prevent a clean sheet when Joelinton scored in stoppage time after receiving a pass from Wilson.
Newcastle is anticipating the return of more players from injury as they begin a stretch of five games in only 13 days, which includes matches against AC Milan and Chelsea.
