In a heartfelt tribute to the Manchester United legend, Sir Alex Ferguson praised Sir Bobby Charlton as a “pillar of support”.
Unfortunately, Charlton, a standout in English football, passed away last weekend at 86 years old.
Following a successful career, during which he aided United in winning the World Cup and European Cup, Charlton continued to contribute to the club as a director and ambassador.
Throughout Sir Alex Ferguson’s illustrious 26-year tenure as manager, he maintained a significant presence at Old Trafford. This era began in 1986.
In a written tribute to be included in the game day program for the upcoming derby game against Manchester City, Ferguson looked back on his hiring and the special bond he shared with Charlton.
He stated: “During a meeting in Glasgow, the directors inquired about my plans for the job. I responded that I would adopt the same strategy I utilized at Aberdeen, focusing on the growth of the entire club rather than just the team. This would involve developing young players.”
While I was discussing this, I noticed Bobby nudging one of the other directors and saying, “that’s exactly what we’re looking for.” It seemed he had already made his decision. From then on, he served as a strong supporter for me.
I am not surprised that there have been tributes to Sir Bobby from all over the world, on every TV channel and in every newspaper. This is because he was undoubtedly the greatest English player ever.
“He was adored for his impressive goals, but his character went beyond that. My father always believed that remaining humble in times of success is a mark of true greatness, and that was exemplified by Bobby.”
He never bragged about his personal accomplishments; he always focused on the team and the club.
Sadly, Charlton passed away shortly after the death of Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy.
He stated, “I apologize profusely to Lady Norma (Charlton), who was constantly by Bobby’s side, particularly during his declining health. My condolences go out to the entire family during this difficult time.”
“Regrettably, I have also experienced the heartbreaking passing of my dear wife, Cathy, this month. I would like to express my gratitude to the club, its supporters, and all those who have offered their sympathies during this difficult time.”
