Salah is confident that Liverpool has the potential to secure the Premier League title, as he led the team to a challenging victory against Newcastle with his exceptional performance.
Salah bounced back from a missed penalty in the first half to score two goals and assist another, leading Jurgen Klopp’s team to a thrilling 4-2 victory on New Year’s Day at Anfield. This win puts them three points ahead at the top.
This was his last match before joining the Egyptian team for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.
Salah informed Sky Sports that the outcome was excellent for their team. The match was highly competitive, but they were able to secure three points and take the top spot on the table. He emphasized the importance of remaining composed and winning each game.
When asked about his team’s chances of winning the title, he replied, “We have a lot of belief. It’s important for us to work hard and play to our potential on the field. If we can do that and put in the effort, we have a good chance of continuing to win.”
Salah was happy to end his club responsibilities on a positive note, despite having his first of two penalty kicks saved by the impressive Martin Dubravka, goalkeeper for Newcastle.
He stated, “I regret not scoring the goal. I did not want to depart from the national team with such a lackluster performance.”
For the first shot, I was unsure because the goalkeeper moved, but for the second shot, I executed it just like I practiced in training.
In the second half, Salah scored a goal with a simple tap-in. However, Alexander Isak swiftly equalized the score. Nevertheless, Liverpool regained the lead with goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo.
Sven Botman scored another goal, but Salah sealed the victory for the home team – who had 34 shots – as they deserved it after Dubravka committed a foul on Diogo Jota.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, stated that it should not come as a shock that Mo has the ability to impact a game. As one accumulates more goals, they become accustomed to missing opportunities and learn how to continue persevering and getting better, which is exactly what Mo did.
“The game was intense from beginning to end and there were many aspects that I enjoyed. However, the goals we let in were the only downside.”
The game had an incredible energy and atmosphere.
Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle, acknowledged that his team was lucky to reach half-time without conceding a goal, but he had concerns about the two penalties awarded against them.
“He stated that he is still uncertain about the penalties we gave up. He particularly questioned the second one, as it did not appear to be a legitimate penalty.”
There are two perspectives to consider: I believe the challenge on Sean Longstaff (in the second half) should have been a penalty, which would have had a huge impact on the game. However, when they went up the other end, it was not deemed a penalty.
Newcastle has lost five out of six matches in the league and has only won one out of their 12 away games, making it difficult for them to keep up with the top four teams.
Howe stated that we must prioritize maintaining confidence, therefore we should avoid exaggerating situations.
Liverpool put on an impressive display, making it challenging for us. Despite this, we managed to hold them to a 0-0 score.
Aside from the penalty moments, the goals we let in were underwhelming.
