During Getafe’s 2-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano, Mason Greenwood was red carded for reportedly shouting profanity at a referee.
Last summer, Greenwood was loaned from Manchester United to the Spanish club.
One of the three players from Getafe was ejected during a crucial loss at home, as the team was aiming for a spot in Europe. After teammate Juanmi Latasa had already been expelled, Greenwood was also given a red card for expressing his frustration when a foul was not called in the 50th minute of the game.
According to the post-game report from referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez, it was stated that Greenwood had used profane language towards him.
The statement was challenged by Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, who clarified that his player was expressing discontent in general and not specifically targeting the official.
According to Bordalas, the player stated that he said “f*** sake” and did not direct any insults towards anyone.
Getafe’s Damian Suarez was given a red card while Rayo Vallecano’s Sergio Camello scored twice, resulting in a victory and three points for Rayo Vallecano.
Greenwood, who received his only England appearance in 2020, made his way to LaLiga on the last day of the summer transfer window following Manchester United’s announcement of his departure from the Old Trafford team.
An internal investigation was conducted following the dismissal of criminal charges against the player.
Greenwood refuted the accusations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control brought against him, and the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped their charges in February of last year.
