Mary Earps, the goalkeeper for England, has recently received an honorary doctorate from her former university.
She expressed her pride in being involved in the growth of women’s football and hoped that future generations would continue to benefit from her contributions as she received recognition for her impact on the sport.
The Lioness expressed her gratitude for receiving an honorary degree from Loughborough University, calling it “truly amazing”.
Upon receiving the award, the English and Manchester United athlete reflected on her experience at the university, where she earned a degree in information management and business studies in 2016. She described it as a busy period and admitted that she did not anticipate life becoming even busier in the future.
“Being granted an honorary doctorate is truly remarkable,” expressed Earps.
Returning to the place where I received my degree in 2016 holds a special significance. My time at Loughborough University felt busy and hectic, but little did I realize that life would become even more chaotic in the future.
Being involved in the development of women’s football is a wonderful experience. We have been able to build upon the efforts of those who came before us and reap the rewards of their hard work. It is our hope that future generations will also reap the benefits of our accomplishments during this period.
“I am grateful to have been bestowed with this honorary degree for my contributions to sport, as I understand not everyone has the opportunity to be present here today.”
Earps earned her first cap for the national team one year after completing her university studies, at a renowned institution recognized for its athletic successes.
She assisted the Lionesses in their victory at the Uefa Women’s European Championships in 2022, leading the team to European glory.
Unfortunately, the team fell short of winning the World Cup this year after being eliminated in the final match. However, Earps received recognition as the top goalkeeper of the tournament and was presented with the Golden Glove award.
In 2023, she was chosen as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year and is also up for consideration for the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year accolade. The winner will be revealed next week.
At the winter graduation ceremony at Loughborough University on Thursday, Earps was recognized as a “Doctor of the University.”
Professor Nick Jennings, the vice-chancellor and president of Loughborough University, praised Mary’s remarkable impact on women’s football.
“She consistently performs brilliantly at the very highest level, inspiring both peers and future generations.
“Loughborough University is known for its exceptional athletics program and alumnae like Mary fill us with great pride.”
“We are thrilled to grant Mary an honorary degree as we anticipate her continued success on the international level.”
