Pep Guardiola believes that his Manchester City team is performing as a unit that has confidence in their ability to win the Champions League once more.
The leader of the City also praised the team’s ability to perform consistently, as they advanced to the quarter-finals of Europe’s top club competition with a convincing win against FC Copenhagen.
The second leg of City’s last-16 tie at the Etihad Stadium resulted in a 3-1 win, ultimately leading to a solid 6-2 aggregate victory for the team.
Guardiola said: “We are a team that believes we can do it. Listen, we’re competing with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but the important thing is that seven years in a row we are here. Consistency.
When we arrived back from the club, such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich where they always expect to prevail, I sensed that the club itself did not share this sentiment, rather than the players.
We are present because we required some time. Usually, individuals and superiors are not granted time, and neither are hierarchies. However, they allotted us time to endure losses against Monaco, Liverpool, and Tottenham – all steps in the process of achieving our goal. This is because when a team is not used to being in that position, it is not possible to achieve it immediately.
It is effortless for clubs with a rich history such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United as they have become accustomed to it.
“We were provided with the necessary time and now we find ourselves in a critical stage where defeat is a possibility, however we are equipped to take on any competition as evidenced by our appearances in the final, semi-finals, and now quarter-finals. This showcases our steadfastness in European competitions.”
City underwent significant changes and seemed to lack enthusiasm after scoring an early goal each from Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez.
Mohamed Elyounoussi scored a goal for the determined Danes, but they were ultimately overpowered and Erling Haaland’s 29th goal of the season completed the scoring.
Pep Guardiola stated that we were able to advance against a formidable opponent. Both Bayern Munich and Manchester United experienced this, as well as Galatasaray. The team we faced was well-prepared and proved to be a challenging rival.
“We require the efforts of all in order to attain victory, and we have certainly utilized their contributions. I am greatly satisfied with our overall performance. While some may have high expectations, I am aware of the challenges that must be overcome.”
Copenhagen coach Jacob Neestrup felt his players could hold their heads high after what has been a memorable European campaign for the European champions having progressed from a tough group.
He expressed his satisfaction with his players and their performance in the group stage, as they successfully progressed to face the top team in the world. He is brimming with pride.
“Undoubtedly, it is important to put in all efforts, as these moments in life cannot be recovered.”
