Liverpool is starting the process of finding a new manager right away, but they have made it clear that the work will be kept private to prevent any distractions for the team as they compete for important titles this season.
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he will be resigning from his position as head coach at the end of this season, which is two years before his contract was set to end.
Soon after, it was announced that Jorg Schmadtke would be departing from his position as sporting director. He had only been brought on in June for a temporary contract, resulting in a significant change in the top management team for the Reds this season.
During Klopp’s press conference, which was supposed to be about the upcoming FA Cup match against Norwich City this weekend, but ended up focusing on the manager’s upcoming departure, club CEO Billy Hogan detailed Liverpool’s plan moving forward.
Hogan stated that he does not want to create an expectation for when the appointment can be made. He explained that they will carefully examine all the data and conduct thorough research before making a decision. He cannot guarantee a specific timeline, as the process will be conducted behind the scenes in order to make the best decision for the football club.
However, it is not meant to be a source of diversion. Its purpose is to allow the team to maintain their performance.
Jurgen desired to allow the club a proper timeframe to conduct a organized procedure, which can be challenging if the information is not yet public. We will follow the same course of action that led us to obtain Jurgen in 2015, and it will remain confidential. FSG president Mike Gordon will be involved in this process, but we will not provide constant updates or discuss other individuals by name.
“We are dedicated to creating a 23/24 campaign that fans can reminisce on with pleasure.”
Meanwhile, Klopp was also questioned about the potential of reversing his choice to leave the club prematurely.
The German expressed his surprise that Alex Ferguson had accomplished the same thing years ago at Manchester United, but he maintained that he would not do it himself.
“I have given a lot of consideration to this decision. Ultimately, I must make it on my own as no one else can do it for me,” Klopp stated. “The owners were aware of my intentions and I am not one to linger. I have thoroughly thought through everything and my goal remains to win everything this season, but that will not alter my decision.”
“I made this decision without considering any specific outcomes. The team has a lot of potential and is in a strong position, making it the right time to pass the reins to someone else.”
Klopp’s aides, Vitor Matos and Pepijn Lijnders, are also expected to leave. Hogan shared that they have aspirations to become managers and Klopp believes they are fully prepared for that next step. However, there is no indication that they will be considered as his replacement.
The boys are prepared. The influence they have had, particularly Pep, on our style of football is remarkable. I am grateful and appreciative of him. He has given me a fresh perspective in the past few years. They will strive for success and I will support them from wherever I may be.
Nevertheless, Klopp disclosed that he will not be involved in choosing his replacement.
He stated that he will not give any advice as he is leaving, which is the last thing they need.
