The third round of the FA Cup will mark the debut of Video Assistant Referee technology in the tournament for the current season. However, it will only be utilized in select matches.
Only games played at Premier League ground will use VAR, due to licensing rules which mean that even at stadiums like West Brom’s Hawthorns, where the technology has previously been implemented, VAR will not be used because West Brom are not currently at Premier League side.
Since 2018, the FA Cup has incorporated VAR, which was initially introduced in a trial capacity. However, the tournament has yet to request approval from the International Football Association Board (Ifab) to fully implement it throughout all matches, as it would require extensive installation at various Football League and non-league stadiums.
The Football Association (FA) has faced criticism for creating an uneven application of the game’s rules in the competition.
In response to the complaints received last year, the FA stated that video assistant referees offer extra support to match officials and should be utilized whenever feasible. However, VAR is currently only available in Premier League stadiums due to the necessary infrastructure, personnel, and expenses involved.
