Gemma Grainger, the manager of Wales, has departed from her position immediately in order to take on the role of head coach for Norway.
The individual, aged 41, led the Wales team for almost three years and brought them close to qualifying for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, they ultimately fell short with a last-minute goal in the play-off final against Switzerland.
I have dedicated my time and effort to our journey over the past three years, and I am grateful to have had the chance to collaborate with this team and represent our proud nation, Grainger expressed on the official website of the Football Association of Wales.
”
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with this team of players and staff, and to represent a country that has shown unwavering pride and enthusiasm for our team.
I did not plan on leaving Cymru, but I received an unexpected opportunity that I couldn’t refuse. It has been quite challenging for me to reach this point. Please understand that the decision to leave was not made lightly.
I have great faith in this team’s ability to advance and qualify. I am certain that they will continue to improve and develop from this point onward.
“Wales will always hold a special place in my heart, thank you for everything.”
Before becoming the manager of Wales in March 2021, Grainger had previously served as coach for multiple age groups for both Leeds and Middlesbrough.
The last match she led ended in a scoreless tie against Germany in the Nations League, held in Swansea in December.
Noel Mooney, CEO of FAW, expressed his appreciation for Gemma’s accomplishments during her tenure as manager of the Cymru national team.
We are pleased with our progress under Gemma and now we are beginning the recruitment process for a new manager who will help us qualify for both the Uefa Euro 2025 and the 2027 FIFA World Cup.
