Gary Neville thinks that Manchester United is heading in the right direction, and he also mentioned how Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already caused some disturbance at his previous club.
British billionaire Ratcliffe has acquired a partial ownership in the Old Trafford club from the Glazer family, granting him authority over the football operations.
His first key appointment is set to be that of Omar Berrada as chief executive, with the Spaniard poached from cross-town rivals Manchester City.
Neville, a former full-back, believes that Berrada’s appointment is a wise decision given his previous senior positions at Barcelona and current role at the City Football Group.
According to the former English international on The Gary Neville Podcast, being the CEO of Man Utd is a huge responsibility with many tasks to manage. However, there are also some simple victories that can be achieved immediately.
I believe effective communication is crucial, especially since the club has lacked a strong voice for the past decade. He could be a valuable addition to our new management team, which can help establish trust with the fans, players, and all those who follow the club.
“They have not had a long-time football operator, which is crucial, but it is a significant challenge and all attention will be on him.”
It is clear that he received an excellent foundation at Man City and Barcelona, two of the most accomplished teams in the past 15 years.
“It appears that Manchester United is making wise choices and heading in the right direction, which can only bring positive results. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was not going to enter without causing some changes. The changes have already begun.”
Dave Brailsford, an important member of Ratcliffe’s team at Ineos, is performing an evaluation of Manchester United to identify areas for potential enhancement.
Erik ten Hag’s team is currently ranked eighth in the Premier League and is 11 points behind the top four. Meanwhile, Marc Skinner, the women’s head coach, is facing criticism due to a disappointing WSL season.
There are significant challenges off the field, too, with Old Trafford in need of renovation, leaving Ratcliffe with plenty on his plate.
Neville holds the belief that finding the appropriate individuals to lead the club’s progress will be crucial.
“Berrada’s appointment was clearly necessary,” Neville commented. “The company was lacking a CEO after Richard Arnold’s resignation. Additionally, they do not currently have a sporting director or a prominent head of recruitment.”
“The three positions that carry the highest level of risk for owners are those involving player spending and revenue generation. The recent hiring of Berrada is likely one of several appointments that will be made within the next few months.”
