Erik ten Hag, manager of Manchester United, does not believe that their six consecutive wins indicate a significant change in their season. However, he does think that they have regained their position in the competition for the top four.
After only two wins in nine games and five losses in December, United has managed to secure five wins and one draw in their last six matches.
Last weekend’s victory at Aston Villa was important as it kept them within six points of fourth-placed Tottenham and with games to come against Luton, Fulham, Everton, Sheffield United and Brentford – not withstanding the Manchester derby in that sequence – maintaining that sort of form will push them closer to Champions League qualification.
Ten Hag stated that it is premature to claim that we have turned a corner. We have not reached that point yet, and we are still not in a favorable position.
“We have re-entered the competition, but we have not achieved the desired position yet. This club strives to be at least in the top four, so we must make up ground. However, I believe we are headed in the right direction.”
The main focus should be on securing a spot in the Champions League once again, as Ten Hag acknowledges that Manchester United is not on the same level as Manchester City, Liverpool, or Arsenal.
He is aware that it will take longer to revive them as contenders for the title, given the amount of resources they have put into developing young players with potential.
“In the summertime, I believe we were in a favorable position: we held the third spot, triumphing in one championship match and reaching the finals in another,” he stated.
“Selecting young players for the future is linked to FFP (Financial Fair Play, now known as Profit and Sustainability). Therefore, it will likely take longer to compete for a top position in the Premier League.”
Was the Dutch coach uncertain about his ability to lead the team back to success after a challenging season? The team had placed third and made it to two cup finals, ultimately winning one.
He stated, “I was certain that once the injured players were back, the team would have the ability to compete for a top-four spot. Now, we must demonstrate it. Throughout the entire season, I firmly believed in this.”
Helping them progress has been the presence of young players Alejandro Garnacho, 19, and Kobbie Mainoo, 18.
Ten Hag acknowledged that their current improvement could potentially result in significant savings for the club during the transfer period.
The speaker stated that Manchester United has a reputation for purchasing players, but believes that the club’s tradition and values lie in giving chances to players from their academy.
”
“We have identified players with potential and have provided them with the necessary time and support to grow and improve. We are also mentoring them to help them reach their full potential.”
”
“We also factor in the fact that they were unable to achieve the desired level at that time. However, when given the chance, they show rapid progress and elevate the team to higher levels in the future.”
“We evaluate the abilities of the player and were confident in their potential. We believe that our team still has talented young players who can follow in the footsteps of Kobbie and Garnacho, who have shown significant improvement in recent months.”
