Erik ten Hag acknowledged that players may occasionally require a motivational boost in order to perform their best, as struggling Manchester United gear up to take on rivals Liverpool.
The Dutch manager’s second campaign leading United has been quite difficult, with losses in half of their 24 matches across all competitions causing doubts about his role.
Consecutive losses to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich, along with numerous injuries, were detrimental to his situation. Manchester United did not meet the level of performance they had achieved in the previous season.
The number of exceptional performers has significantly decreased, as seen with Marcus Rashford, who scored 30 goals for his club last season but has only scored two this season.
When questioned about his preferred approach to optimizing the performance of the forward, Ten Hag emphasized the importance of selecting the appropriate method for each individual player.
Ten Hag stated that players may receive both support and criticism from their coach.
“I believe this could impact our management. When will you use each approach? The tough love or supportive approach?”
Ten Hag is likely hoping that Manchester United does not experience a group of players being motivated by a kick in the backside during their match against bitter rivals Liverpool.
The Red Devils suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat during their previous trip to Anfield in March. They will face a tough challenge on Sunday as they will be missing 11 key players from their first-team lineup.
Ten Hag stated that he always has a strong belief in his team’s ability to win, regardless of the game. He will prepare them with the mindset that victory is within reach.
“Why is that so? It is because it aligns with our game’s rules and principles, as well as our game plan, and stems from my strong confidence in the abilities of my players.”
When asked about what he has observed leading up to the Liverpool game, he replied: “I notice the level of skill on the field and during training.”
The only opportunity to demonstrate it is during the games, correct?
This team has demonstrated their ability in specific matches, excelling under intense pressure and playing exceptional football.
“We experience both highs and lows as a team. Our goal is to become more consistent.”
Ten Hag and his team have not lived up to expectations after a strong first season, causing doubts about his long-term prospects at United.
The indecisiveness of the Glazers and the prolonged acquisition by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group has caused a state of uncertainty, with the Dutchman stating that he has not had any communication with Ineos during their recent visits to the club.
Ten Hag stated that he is unable to comment on the matter as there are other members of the club handling the strategic review. He is simply waiting for updates.
“I am dedicating my attention to my role, which involves collaborating with my team and furthering their growth.”
