Emma Hayes acknowledged that winning the Women’s Champions League this season would be a dream come true and a perfect conclusion to her time at Chelsea.
After this season, Hayes will be leaving the west-London club where she has been for 12 years.
The 47-year-old has yet to win the coveted Champions League trophy, despite several attempts. In the 2021 final, the Blues were defeated 4-0 by Barcelona and have also made it to the semi-finals three times without success.
Prior to Chelsea’s first Group D match against Real Madrid, Hayes stated during a press conference, “Winning would be like a fairytale, of course. However, I was not one to enjoy fairytales growing up – that was my sister’s thing.”
I would be ecstatic to be in a victorious position with this group.
Last season, Chelsea defeated Real 2-0 at Kingsmeadow with goals scored by Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert. They then played to a 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital.
Hayes emphasized the danger posed by left-back Olga Carmona and stated that her team’s previous encounters with Wednesday’s opponents have aided in their preparations.
She stated, “We have evaluated the previous match of last season and Real Madrid’s other matches, including their recent 7-1 victory against Real Sociedad. We are aware of what to anticipate.”
“I believe that our previous experience here is beneficial, as it provides a sense of familiarity. However, we still recognize the importance of not underestimating them.”
“I believe their greatest strengths lie in their extreme abilities. Specifically, Olga’s skill in upward movement on the left.”
“They have skilled players who are constantly searching for opportunities to pass the ball into the goal area, making them highly effective in transitioning from defense to offense.”
The announcement of Hayes’ departure is heartbreaking, according to Chelsea captain Millie Bright.
She mentioned, “It has been quite a whirlwind. I was completely devastated.”
“I have had the privilege of being mentored, coached, and befriended by her. It goes beyond just playing football, as she also serves as a life coach. Playing under her guidance has been a challenging but rewarding experience.”
