Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been left out of the Egypt squad for a forthcoming international friendly tournament.
At the age of 31, he had to leave the Africa Cup of Nations prematurely due to a hamstring injury on January 18 against Ghana. He returned as a substitute in a mid-February game against Brentford, but was subsequently unable to play due to muscle fatigue, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.
This week, Salah returned to training and was substituted into their 5-1 victory over Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, entering in the 74th minute.
The Liverpool top-scorer has 19 goals this campaign and his return to fitness sparked a club-versus-country row, with Egypt previously rejecting Liverpool’s request to exempt their captain from the tournament in Abu Dhabi, where they will face New Zealand and then either Tunisia or Croatia in the final.
Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has acknowledged that it is not his decision to have Egypt play in two games.
We must exercise caution as we navigate through this highly demanding time of the season, but we require the contribution of everyone.
Unfortunately, Salah will not be included in the team roster announced by the Egyptian Football Association on Sunday. As a result, he will have the opportunity to stay with Liverpool and focus on improving his physical condition for the remainder of the title race.
