Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle, has downplayed the importance of a mistake that resulted in a bar at Sunderland, their rival, being adorned in the colors of his team before the FA Cup derby on Saturday.
The team from Wearside is conducting an inquiry into the design of the Black Cats Bar at the Stadium of Light. This bar, which is meant for hosting corporate events for visiting fans, was decorated with black and white colors and slogans related to the rival team, the Magpies. This has caused anger among the home supporters.
However, despite Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus expressing his disgust and hurt over the issue, Newcastle head coach Howe dismissed claims that the 6,000 visiting supporters were given an advantage in the highly-anticipated third-round match.
He responded, “I do not feel that way. These things can happen and it is up to Sunderland to decide what to do with their stadium. It is not our concern.”
This upcoming match marks the first time in almost eight years that the teams will face each other, and it will be Howe’s first experience with the intense Tyne-Wear rivalry. He trusts that his players will be able to handle the heated atmosphere.
When asked about the potential impact of the signage dispute on the enthusiasm of the home crowd, he replied, “No matter what you anticipate, you still have to focus on the game at hand.”
“We must ignore any distractions and focus on playing the game. With the amazing support we have, we can use it to drive us towards a strong performance.”
On Thursday, the dispute was brought to attention when pictures of the bar were shared on social media. Sunderland subsequently expressed regret and announced that the bar would be restored to its original condition.
“I want to express my apologies to all those involved with Sunderland AFC for the events that have occurred today.”
I was appalled and deeply affected by the images being shared online of the offensive signs that were torn down, just like our loyal followers were.
I am accountable for all choices made by our club’s staff and I pledge to personally oversee the necessary adjustments to enhance our performance. It is evident that there are numerous areas in which we can improve.
