The Women’s Super League champions have confirmed that Chelsea’s star football player, Sam Kerr, has sustained an injury to her anterior cruciate ligament.
The forward for the Blues and recipient of the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award twice, suffered the injury while at a training camp in Morocco, held during the WSL winter break.
The captain of Australia, who came in second for the women’s Ballon d’Or this season, will be evaluated by a specialist in the next few days but is expected to be out for a prolonged period of time.
The full severity of the injury is still unknown, but it is expected to prevent the 30-year-old from participating in the remaining matches of the domestic club season. This also means that manager Emma Hayes’s last season with the English champions may be affected, and there is a possibility that the player may not be able to compete in the Paris Olympics.
According to an announcement made on Sunday, it has been confirmed by Chelsea Football Club that their striker, Sam Kerr, suffered an injury to her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while training at their warm weather camp in Morocco.
“Sam will undergo evaluation by a specialist in the near future and then begin her recovery with the medical staff of the club.”
Kerr’s objectives have played a significant role in propelling Chelsea to win four back-to-back WSL championships and three consecutive Women’s FA Cups. The Australian player has a knack for scoring in crucial matches, contributing to the team’s success in winning trophies.
She has achieved the winning goal in three consecutive FA Cup finals and has been awarded the WSL Golden Boot twice.
The recent injury of Kerr highlights the prevalence of ACL injuries among top female football players. Arsenal’s Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema, and Leah Williamson, as well as Barcelona and Spain’s Alexia Putellas, have all experienced this injury in the past few seasons.
Kerr has netted four times in eight matches for the Blues in the WSL this season and has excelled in the Champions League, finding the back of the net five times in four games.
