Pep Guardiola desires to “complete a small loop” and include the Club World Cup in Manchester City’s collection of trophies.
The city, which achieved a triumphant treble of winning the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup last season, has traveled to Saudi Arabia for the international tournament taking place this week.
On Tuesday in Jeddah, they will compete against the Asian champions, Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan, in the semi-finals. They are hoping to secure a spot in Friday’s final.
The City team is heavily favored to win the tournament, but their manager Guardiola believes it is not a guaranteed outcome.
Guardiola informed the media during his pre-game press briefing: “I am delighted to be here, it is a privilege.”
This is Man City’s first time here, which highlights the challenge. We will not assume it will be easy and instead view it as a privilege.
“We are determined to win this trophy as it is one that we have yet to achieve. It would complete our collection of trophies and mark the achievement of winning all possible titles. This is our final goal.”
I am unsure if we will have another opportunity. It could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is challenging to be in this situation.
“I believe the players are aware and we will strive to do well tomorrow.”
The city’s recent performance has been erratic, with only one victory in their past six Premier League matches.
Their most recent disappointing outcome occurred on Saturday when they were equalized by two late goals, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.
Guardiola is not worried about their performance, even though they are currently five points behind leaders Arsenal.
According to him, we strive for improved outcomes, although our performances have been exceptional apart from the Aston Villa match.
“We need to work on our performance in the final moments of our games, and be more mindful of our actions in specific situations. However, we aim to sustain our enthusiasm and determination to play at a top level, both with and without possession, against Urawa.”
City is currently awaiting the confirmation of striker Erling Haaland’s physical condition, as he has been absent from the last three matches due to a foot injury.
Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku have joined the team on their trip as they approach full recovery from their injuries, but it is unlikely that they will participate in the game.
Bernardo Silva, a midfielder, stated that Erling is a crucial player for their team, and it cannot be denied. However, the biggest strength of City during his time there is their ability to remain a cohesive team, regardless of who is absent, and compete for all titles.
Silva maintained that the players were not lacking in motivation for the tournament.
He stated that there is no fatigue when playing in the FIFA Club World Cup. The team is driven to participate in the tournament.
