The parents of a six-year-old child are filing a lawsuit against United Airlines for $75,000, claiming their daughter was left “scarred and disfigured” from a meal on a flight.
In July 2022, a child referred to as O.F. in the legal case was on a United Airlines flight from Israel to New Jersey with her mother when the incident took place.
While on the flight, a flight attendant provided O.F.’s mother with a hot meal on a tray, which she then placed on the fold-down tray table in front of her child.
Last week’s lawsuit alleges that the tray table was faulty and angled downwards, causing the meal to slide off and land on the girl’s lap.
According to the lawsuit, the food on O.F.’s meal tray was excessively hot and resulted in O.F. sustaining serious burn injuries.
The mother stated in her lawsuit that she asked for immediate medical assistance for her child, but claimed that the employees were unable to provide sufficient care due to United not equipping the aircraft with suitable medical supplies to treat burn injuries.
During the rest of the flight, they asserted that their child experienced “severe discomfort” and is now “permanently injured and disfigured” due to the incident.
The parents are alleging that the airline was negligent by not providing their child with food at a safe temperature, not properly maintaining, inspecting, and repairing tray tables on the plane, and not offering access to medical equipment and care during the flight, among other claims.
The legal case also stated that United neglected to inform the girl or her mother about the faulty tray table.
The parents are seeking compensation for previous and future medical expenses.
They are seeking monetary compensation of over $75,000 and a trial by jury.
The Independent received a statement from United Airlines stating that they are unable to provide a response due to ongoing legal proceedings.
