A notable member of the Democratic party is advising Joe Biden and his followers to heed the voices of the voters.
Tim Ryan, a former Democratic Congressman who competed against author JD Vance for a Senate seat in 2022, stated that his party must listen to the majority of voters who are uninterested in a potential rematch between Biden and Trump in the 2024 election.
On Thursday, Mr. Ryan discussed the recent success of the left in securing abortion rights in his state. He expressed concern about his party’s reputation in states such as Ohio and the Midwest.
According to Mr. Biden, the issue of his “brand” is not helping him. He straightforwardly stated that his age, which is 80 years old, is the main concern that voters bring up when discussing whether they would support his re-election in 2024. This has been a recurring concern for the incumbent president for many months.
Regarding this matter, Mr. Ryan advised his fellow Democrats to cease their efforts to silence Rep. Dean Phillips, a congressman from Minnesota who left his leadership position in the House in order to enter the race and challenge the current president for the Democratic nomination, despite having low odds of winning. Mr. Phillips has asserted that voters are highly dissatisfied with the possibility of Mr. Biden running again, and that the Democratic party’s chances of defeating Donald Trump in 2024 are being negatively impacted as a result.
“If the election were to take place at this moment, President Biden would not win, posing a danger to the future of the United States. However, I will ensure that this does not occur,” stated Mr. Phillips during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press.
Mr. Ryan advised his party to heed that message, cautioning that the president’s re-election campaign could adversely affect voter enthusiasm.
“We are representatives of the Democratic party, the party that supports democracy. We should not shy away from democracy, as the electorate is clearly trying to convey a message to us,” he stated. “Based on all the surveys and information, it is evident that they do not want a repeat of the Biden-Trump matchup.”
“I am saying, we advocate for being the pro-democracy party, and then someone enters [the race] to have a discussion and gets severely criticized,” he expressed regretfully.
Currently, his party has no intentions of arranging debates between Mr. Biden and any of the other contenders for the nomination, such as Mr. Phillips.
The possibility of Mr. Biden winning a second term as president has come into doubt following a recent poll by The New York Times and Siena College that shows him behind former President Donald Trump in important swing states. The 76-year-old Republican ex-president is also facing pressure from his own party to retire due to concerns about his age and the numerous felony charges he is currently facing in four different criminal cases.
Despite not participating in any of the three GOP primary debates held so far in 2023, Mr. Trump continues to actively campaign for the presidency and maintains a significant lead in all polls of the Republican candidates.
The complete interview with Mr. Ryan from The Independent will be released this weekend.
