According to reports, the United States and United Kingdom have initiated aerial attacks on Houthi rebel locations in Yemen.
Four US officials have confirmed to Reuters that there are reports of potential strikes by both nations against the Iranian-backed rebels. These strikes are in response to recent attacks by the group on commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
According to the Associated Press, a number of locations in Yemen, known to be utilized by the Houthis, were attacked on Thursday by Tomahawk missiles launched from warships and fighter jets. The military objectives consisted of logistical centers, air defense structures, and areas used for storing weapons.
There have been news of three blasts in the city of Sana’a, Yemen.
The recent strikes were the initial military action taken by the US against the Houthis in response to their ongoing use of drones and missiles to attack commercial ships since November. This conflict began with the outbreak of war in Israel and the Houthis initially targeted ships associated with Israel.
The synchronized military attack occurred only one week after the White House and several allied nations issued a final caution to the Houthis to stop their attacks or risk facing military intervention. The officials, who spoke anonymously in order to talk about military actions, confirmed the strikes to AP.
After an emergency cabinet meeting on Thursday, UK prime minister Rishi Sunak announced strikes. There were calls for Parliament to be reconvened by Mr Sunak, as top Cabinet leaders met to discuss potential actions.
