During a flight in India, a passenger was stuck in the lavatory for the entire duration of the flight due to a door malfunction.
On Wednesday, a man traveling on a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru attempted to use the restroom after takeoff. However, he ended up experiencing a distressing and lengthy journey of one hour and 45 minutes.
Upon realizing that the man was stuck in the bathroom, the crew made an effort to open the door from the exterior, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
The passenger was released from the cramped restroom only after the flight arrived at Bengaluru airport and technicians were called to assist.
SpiceJet, a private airline, has expressed remorse over the incident and has promised to fully refund the passenger’s airfare as compensation.
According to a statement from the airlines, a passenger was trapped in the lavatory for approximately one hour on a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru on 16 January. This was due to a malfunction in the door lock while the aircraft was in the air.
“During the trip, our team offered aid and direction to the passenger. Upon reaching the destination, an engineer unlocked the lavatory door, and the passenger was promptly given medical assistance,” the statement stated.
According to reports, the flight crew also used a note passed under the door to communicate with the passenger who was stuck in the lavatory.
The passenger received a message advising them to remain calm when their efforts to unlock the door were unsuccessful. The note also reminded them that the plane would be landing shortly, so they should close the toilet lid and take a seat.
“Please ensure your own safety. The engineer will arrive as soon as the main door is opened,” the note stated. “Remain calm.”
At the moment, there has been a surge of occurrences and issues in the Indian aviation industry, including flight disruptions and cancellations.
The circumstances have deteriorated due to thick fog caused by a cold front covering certain areas of northern India, causing disruptions in flight operations.
A viral video surfaced on Monday showing a passenger striking a pilot on an IndiGo flight. The pilot was attacked while announcing a further delay for the Delhi-Goa flight, which had already been delayed for over 10 hours.
A flight operated by Air India experienced a 17-hour delay, causing a debate to arise when videos surfaced of passengers eating their meals on the runway while waiting.
