A popular London bagel store, known for its 24/7 operation, has closed down due to a repossession by lawyers. The public is advised to avoid the shop.
The Beigel Shop, self-proclaimed as “iconic” and the longest-standing establishment on Brick Lane, unexpectedly shut down on Tuesday. A High Court order of possession was posted on the door.
The solicitors’ letter stated that they have taken control of the property mentioned above. Trying to enter the property again is considered a crime and legal action will be taken for trespassing and damaging property.
In a matter of hours, the initial announcement was replaced with a new one stating that the bakery would temporarily close for necessary electrical maintenance.
“We appreciate your support. We will return before you know it,” the notification stated.
The store, allegedly founded in 1855, is typically open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
However, on Wednesday, clients were unable to access the platform and its Facebook page was experiencing technical difficulties. The website states that it is restricted to owners only for login purposes.
A user on Instagram commented: “Is the statement below the post accurate? I really hope it is. My family and I have frequently made the trip from the Home Counties just to see you!”
In the previous year, the bakery and coffee franchise Le Pain Quotidien shut down all except one of its London locations.
The Independent has reached out to Thirsk Winton, the solicitors listed on the writ of possession, to verify if they are managing the case. However, as of the time of publication, no response has been received.
